And Dell and Roxio have been no help to date.

The problem: The LGEUS GCE-8481B CD-RW in my Dell Dimension 8250 is a marvel of technology until I ask it to accept a data file over 15Mb in size. It simply hangs, and no matter what software (including DirectCD and even Windows) I end, it continues to hang, even to the point that I must switch off the computer at the power strip to reboot.

As I save myself money and the planet resources by taking downloads of software when I purchase new software, I have more than just a couple of such files I'd like to back up.

So far Dell's response has been to tell me everything they know about CD-RWs and hope I find my answer in the resulting barrage. Roxio has simply stayed below the horizon. Can anyone here help?

What operating system are you using?

Sorry-left a few pertinent details out.

Operating System is WinXP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1 (pre-installed).
CD-RW software is DirectCD Version 5.2.0.91.
And I usually use PowerDesk Pro 5.0 when I drag 'n' drop, though I've been known to use the Explorer if it's open.

The only issue i've seen so far, and i'm sure others have seen more, was the built in cd burning software. I don't have XP personally (wouldn't have it actually) but they had to disable the built in software for everything to work properly.

Let us know how it goes... ~ Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Henry Ford~

Sorry ares69; it didn't work. No change in (hang) behavior.

But thanks for the idea.

Try turning down the burn speed to only 4X and see how that goes.
Are you doing the direct CD thing or are you burning a CD from scatch?
Btw, when you want to restart or turn off a frozen PC with ATX power, hold down the power button for about 3-4 seconds and it will shut off. No need to physically remove the power cord ;)

If you can understand it, you probably don't.

I've tried to find a place to alter write speed, but to no avail; I'm open to suggestions. Remember that this is the DirectCD Basic that came with the machine, not the Platinum version they want $$ for.

I'm doing the DirectCD (drag 'n' drop, or even 'copy to'), adding new data to a CDRW already about 1/3 full. I can almost anything already, but my limit appears to be somewhere between 23,852,521 and 32,941,776 bytes (a successful add and an unsuccessful add file).

And thanks for the tip on restart; I think I can wait 3 or 4 seconds. It was those 2-day waits that frosted my flakes.

Found a place to alter speed. No joy at any speed.

Finally got through to Roxio (had to delete my old Roxio cookies), downloaded the
update, installed, and solved all problems. The "hang" is a documented problem solved by v.5.3.1 & later.

Thanks for assistance; at least I now know how to power off my toy correctly.

And to all a good night!
