Hi,

Hope some one can help with this, I wwant to install a CD RW into my 333Mhz machine, the Bios can detect both the CD RW and the CD R, but I can't see them in Windows (Me). I have checked all the usual stuff jumpers, master, slave, and the ribbon cables and they all seem ok

They are not appearing in Device manager either, and I have tried the add hardware wizard but it does not detect any new hardware. The CD RW is an optorite 52x32x52 I have looked on the web site for drivers for it but there does not seem to be any.

I have tried installing a genearic driver for them but it does not work

Cheers Terry

From this website:

If the BIOS recognizes the device but Windows does not recognize the device then either: a) the device probably does not comply with the 8+ year old ATA/ATAPI and MMC standards (therefore it is defective), or b) some software bug in the OS drivers exists.

You may be able to get updated Windows drivers via the Microsoft web site or via the "automatic update feature" found in some versions of Windows.

The worst case is this... Return the device to the location where it was purchased and get a different device that is known to work with your version of Windows.

A couple questions for you:

1) What version of Windows?
2) Does Windows see the CD-ROM drive when the CD-RW burner is disconnected?
3) Go to Start->Settings->ControlPanel->System and click on the 'Performance' tab. Does it say any devices are running in MS-DOS compatibility mode?

Remember that you don't need to manually load a driver for optical devices like CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. They have something called firmware which is built-in to the drive itself. There will still be an entry in Device Manager, however the point is that you don't need to worry about having the right driver.

Try each device by itself on the IDE channel as a last resort. If that doesn't make a difference, I strongly suspect it's a Windows problem since it's affecting two drives. CD-ROMs have been known to disappear...

Hi,

Thanks for your help, in answer to questions:
1. I'm using Win Me
2. No, Windows still can't see the CDR with the CDRW disconnected.

I have tried each device seperatly but neither of them show in windows.

Cheers Terry

Hi,

Many thanks to every body who posted advice. I've found a fix for my prob, and have now got the CDRW installed My PC was running in DOS compatability Mode which, amongst other things prevents the protected -mode drivers from initialising when Windows starts. When this occurs, a NOIDE value is placed in the registry which prevents windows from making future attempts to initialise the protected-mode driver.

If anyone else has similiar probs go here:
