I hope this is the right forum for this topic...

Annyway...

I have a Creative DVD. And it worked just fine until recently...

But then one day out of the blue™...

It just stopped reading CDs.

I mean it works you can open it even eject it in a program like CD player. But no matter which CD you put in it acts like it's empty.

This is not very likely but still... Could it be a software error?

Thanx

Hate to say it but it sounds like the laser has died. The fact that Windows is recognizing ans accessing the drive itself but not the media would indicate this. Can you get hold of another drive to use as a check. If it will read disks in another one then thats it. Also you could try using a boot disk with CD support (Win 95 or 98 start up disk would be fine) and seeing if you can access it in DOS. If not again its the drive.

* The DOS tip is very good.

This will eliminate the software error theory.

Yes i tried that DOS tip and still nothing...

So I guess it is a laser problem...

So now what... Can it be repaired and is it worth it?

THROW AWAY ITEM.......
like all computer hardware that is CHEAP, it's a throw away part.

Despite the Creative Labs name, they are cheap generic, low-grade CD-ROMS (make in China like the other junk ones).

when you replace it, spend the extra $20 and buy a NAME BRAND DVD.
Like Panasonic,,,,,, NOT SONY, same made in China junk.
Hitachi, or Samsung are the only cheaper ones I will recommend.

Hey, don't take my word for it,,,,, do some internet research on NEW DVD players........
search terms: review DVD PC 2002 (etc)
