Hello all!!

I have a problem now! "My computer" doen't show e:. DOS dosn't even recognize e: (at the command prompt). The following was actually found in autoexec.bat's last line

REM ** LOADHIGH C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CD1

I changed it to C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CD1. No improvement.

The cd-rom is creative PC-DVD Dxr2. O/S is Win98. I tried to do "Add new hardware" process but, it gives me a list of CD-roms such as mitsumi, sony but not this particular CD-ROM.

As this computer is also used by several other people, I have no idea of what had happenned to it. Do I have to download controllers? or Is it a hardware problem?

I would appreciate if you could give me some instructions regarding this.

Thanks!!

It looks to me like you don't have the driver SBIDE.SYS located in the sub-dir C:\SBCD\DRV\ on your hard drive, so it can't be loaded when CONFIG.SYS file is run. I suggest you try doing a SEARCH in Windows for it, or look on the Creative installation disk.

Unable to Access CD-ROM Drive After Installing Windows 98/Me
----------------------------------------------------------
or

HARDWARE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- One IDE channel has a supported hard disk, and the second channel has a CD-ROM or other type of
drive that requires real-mode drivers to be loaded. Because of the serialization between the
two IDE channels, it is impossible to access the hard disk in protected mode and use the other
device in real mode. This causes the protected-mode driver to fail initialization, and the NOIDE
switch is placed in the registry to prevent future errors. Both disk devices then operate in real mode.

- The driver for the IDE controller is manually removed from Device Manager and then reinstalled,
or the protected-mode driver is disabled and then re-enabled. Some PCI controller drivers are not
designed for dynamic enabling and disabling, and can cause the protected-mode driver to fail
initialization.

Device drivers for Windows which MAY cause this problem

- CMD PCI-0640 PCI-IDE controller
- Standard Dual PCI-IDE controller
- Opti Dual PCI-IDE controller
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
or

No CD showing in My computer, system reports compatibility problems with IDE controller, you may have the second IDE channel turned off in CMOS, but "on" in the IDE controller properties in device manager.

Have you been to PCfriendly's website?

Creative Labs PC-DVD Encore

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Download the latest Creative Labs drivers.
Step 1: Click the link
Click the link below to download and install the Windows 95/98 update from Creative's technical Support website. Note: The Windows NT drivers are not compatible with PCFriendly at this time. This link will launch you directly to their license agreement page. Click "I Agree" to proceed.

Step 2: Download File dvdewup.exe
Now you will see a window called "File Download". Make sure "Save this program to disk" is selected and hit the OK button. Now you will see a window called "Save As". Click the down arrow in the box next to "Save in:" and select your C: drive. Select the button at the top right which looks like a file folder with an asterisk. This will create a new folder which you will name "CLTMP". Now hit the "Save" button to download the file. After the file has downloaded, click the "OK" button on the window which tells you download is complete.

Step 3: Extract Files From dvdewup.exe
Double click on the My Computer icon at the upper right of your desktop, then the C: drive icon and then the CLTMP folder. Now double click on the dvdewup.exe file. This will open a black DOS window and start extracting individual files into the CLTMP directory.

Step 4: Install Creative Drivers
Double click the Install.txt file for complete installation instructions from Creative Labs. You can also click here for detailed installation instructions.

Click here to begin downloading the Win 95/98 Creative PC-DVD Encore Drivers

Seems likely they will have answers for their product..

back to default, rebooted and got d: back

your second link: i tried to get the encore

Right-click on My Computer, choose properties, click the performance tab and make sure the File System & Virtual Memory are running in 32-bit mode. If not, post back.

Click the File System button , click the CD-ROM tab. What is listed?
================================================
iii)start->setting->control panel->multimedia
no letter assigned
================================================
can you assign a letter or is it greyed out?

I'd suggest starting up in Safe Mode, going to Device Manager and remove all the problem devices. It's very important that you have your original CD or the drivers provided by the various manufactures components on your computer. As soon as it restarts, it will hopefully identify these devices correctly and install the correct drivers. That's why you have to be prepared with the driver disks.
