CD -rom failure

I have a Sony laptop which I purchased about 3 years ago, the DVD-rom in the unit has fail, I went into the Sony website thinking that I just could buy a new DVD-rom and install it myself (I am a Computer Tech so I know how to do it). Sony beleives that the DVD-rom can not be changed by an end user and wants me to ship the laptop to them, I prefer not to ship the unit. My question: Can any one tell me of a web site were I can purchase the DVD-rom for my laptop?

I'm pretty sure you can install an off the shelf slim drive yourself. I've installed those in other Sony VAIOs in the past. Pull your old one out and measure it and compare to those online. Search the net as lots of online stores have them. I think they're about $100-$120 for a DVDRW.

They just want your money for the installation. I would think they would sell you one either way.
