I have a gateway laptop (Windows XP as OS)..........where the CD-Rom drive is not being read by the computer

(for example, if you go to "My Computer" icon, you wont see any "D" drive.........)

I tried this cd drive on another laptop and it was found without any problems, so there isn't a problem with the drive.........yet why is my own laptop not picking it up?

Is there anyway to detect this (manually) perhaps?

Many thanks

If it's an internal CD the Bios may be wrong. If it's external you may not have the drivers loaded.

As I said in the previous thread, don't bother with windows until your BIOS reads and identifies all your IDE drives. You are just wasting time pissing around in windows.

The problem is very likely a physical problem with the cable and connectors. Be sure they are not inverted. There is a tiny chance the IDE port could be zapped, but the odds of that are very very slim.

Do check your bios set up, ie set the IDE drive detect to auto if it is not already. A setting that doesn't match could make the BIOS ignor a drive.
