I just reinstalled Win 98SE and installed all updates and service packs. Windows will only boot if I have the "force compatibility mode disk access" box checked. In this case, the CD ROM and CD-RW drives are not accessible (not even shown in "My Computer" or Windows Explorer). If the box is not checked, the system hangs on the Windows splash screen.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Check the Power On Self Test. Is the computer seeing the CD-ROM on boot up before Windows starts?

Did you partition first (Fdisk) and then format?
Is your CD seen in the BIOS?......set all IDE to "Auto".
How old a machine is it?.
Did you use 98SE CDROM to reinstall?

Thanks for the info.

I installed Windows 98 using the Compaq Quick Restore CD's.

How do I check the BIOS and what should I look for?

Also, I downloaded and installed Media Player 9. Could this cause a conflict that makes the CD drive inaccessible? I can't remember the timing of downloading vs. losing CD drive access.

Thanks again.

Try F1 or F2 or Delete Key or F10......
It could be almost anything...

If you try these and they don't work...then hold down ANY key while rebooting and you should get an error message telling you a keyboard key is stuck and how to get in to fix it......

Also try hit the PAUSE key during boot to pause the info screen for info when it's whizzing by...and ANY other key to resume boot...to see if windows see's the drive like Rob2806 said

Are you saying you had it working WITH the WinMedia 9 installed....if not....Add/Remove....save the downloaded .exe file for later fun(see below)

Check the Settings in Media Player to see if it took over/recognizes your Drive somehow......( I use 6.4 only)..all that bloat/ActiveX crap in all newer media players more than iirrkkks me!!!!
