Well, everytime I set the UDMA mode for the CD drive (whatever it is) in my old PII-350, plugged in a HP/Slot-1/Intel 440BX maindboard, the Windows doesn´t boot anymore. I have to boot in safe mode, and than export an earlyer backup of the registry, in order to recover the dammaged one, and fix the problem. My HD works in UDMA 2 with no problems, and the CD drive is alone as a master in the IDE 2. The IDE drivers are from the Windows.
Can someone help me ?

Many CD-ROM drives only work in PIO Mode, especially older ones. That's normal.

That´s not the case, the CD-rom was working in DMA mode in another comp., so I think the problem is driver related. Thanks for answering anyway !

Naguall,
I would double-check that thought that it used to work in DMA mode for several reasons:

1) CD-ROM drives (or any optical device for that matter) doesn't use a "driver" per se. Instead, it has onboard firmware that Windows reads. When you check Device Manager, it shows you a generic driver is installed, but it is really using the drive's firmware. Therefore, it shouldn't really matter if you change PC's. Both read the device info directly from the drive.

2) If you're so certain, put it back into the other PC as a test. Make sure the DMA setting sticks and that there are no errors.

3) The version of Windows might make a difference regarding how compatible it is with DMA mode on certain drives. Check to make sure both PC's that the drive has been in have the same version.

You also might want to try changing the IDE cable. Sometimes a 40-wire is required on older drives to get the right speed, even though 80-wire is backwards compatible. And if you already do have a 40-wire, then do the opposite and replace it with an 80-wire.

There are many, many possibilities here...

I have already tested 2 (1 brand new Benq CD-rom and 1 LG CD Recorder)other optical devices that work on DMA mode in my 1 combo, and it´s the same thing. Infortunately there´s no bios update for the HP main-board. Maybe it´s some kind of bug with the chipset.

It's possible, but I'd appreciate a full listing of what you've tried:

- changing the IDE cable (so that you've tried both 40-wire and 80-wire)

- try making sure that the master device is always attached at the "end" of the cable, not the "middle"

- version of Windows?

etc...

Let´s go:

1- I have changed the flat-cables from 40 to 80.

2- I have put the HD and the optical drive (as slave) in the 1st. IDE chanel.

3- I have tried all the possible positions for the CD-rom jumper.
4- I have updated the LG drive firmware.

5- In the Setup I have changed the setting of the drive from "AUTO" to "CD-ROM", and back again.

6- My 1st combo, where the drives work OK, is running WINXP. The second (PII-350/Intel BX440 board, from HP/256MB ram/VOOdoo-4 agp/Sansumg 4GB HD/CD-Recorder from LG/OPTi Sound card/Realtek Lan card), is running WIN98. I don´t belive the problem is due to Win98, because the CD-recorder was working in the UDMA mode in this same combo, when it used a mobo from PC-shits (Sis620 shipset). All the trouble began when I had to change the mainboard.

That´s it !

Alrighty then. Well it does seem like it's a conflict with the motherboard, possibly the IDE controllers.

Just one last thing...what's the model numbers of the BenQ and LG drives?
