We have a new server with Windows Server 2003 installed. Attempting to install more software, it appears our CD-ROM drive does not read any disks when put into the tray. The drivers are up-to-date and the name appears under the hardware list (PBDS CD-ROM DH-48N1P).

Going into the BIOs. The IDE Controller 0 under auto detect detects CD-ROM reader. The IDE Controller 1 under auto detect detects Unknown Device. Upon boot up we also receive a small error line saying something to the following: Primary IDE Controller not detected. The server continues to boot up even after this line from the hard drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!

Are there any other IDE devices connected besides the CD-ROM?

Have you tried moving the CD-ROM to the other IDE controller?

A good rule of thumb is to connect the "master" device to the end of the IDE cable and connect the "slave" to the middle. I'm not sure why the BIOS sees an unknown device on IDE 1.

zion03,

Given that it's a new server, I'd contact the manufacturer for warranty support. I've had this very situation occur in the field during a server install.

Yes, go with the warranty first, as it sounds like your IDE Controller is/may be damaged...

also have you tried another CD/DVD drive and/or cable?

Sounds to me like a CD Drive problem.

The fact that it is seen by the BIOS and by the OS tells me that the cable, controller, and IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) board are OK.

More likely you have a bad laser, stuck head, bad focus yoke, something along those lines.

Call your manufacturer, they'll send you a new drive.

Thank you guys for the help. This is going to sound so embaressing and pathetic (; But in my haste I forgot to check the format of the disk the person wanted to install the software from. Apparently regular cd-roms won't read DVDs :p who'd have guessed right. This is what happens between caffeine deficiency and insomnia.

Thanks for the suggestions! Appreciate it!

The IDE Controller 0 under auto detect detects CD-ROM reader. The IDE Controller 1 under auto detect detects Unknown Device.
isn't explained by the fact that the media was a DVD...

but glad you found the culprit...
