Viglen Genie 350 - Win 98

My CD has recently been playing up so went to PC world today and bought a new one.
The new one looks exactly like old one with same connections at back. PC world man said just replace the old one I showed him. This I did putting connectors in exactly as with old one.
No joy, My Computer does not now show any D drive just A and C. The device has power.
I tried using the floppy provided but no difference, in any case booklet says driver only needed with win 3. Jumper is set to slave position as it says.
When I turn computer on I get message
ATAPI/IDE CD Rom device driver version 4.14 Jan 1999
CD-Rom device not ready Abort or Retry.
If I abort windows loads as normal.

I am not very strong on computer knowledge so what am I doing wrong ( in simple terms please)

Howdy:

Double check your IDE cable connection.. Make sure the red-stripe is connected to Pin 1 on the cd-rom.

Checked that. Is in correct position. Any further tips please.

set it to master and put in on the secondary ide controller and see if that makes a difference, also once your in windows check device manager and look for any problems listed there and post back

1st, depending on your Operating system you need to go to the "device manager" and deinstall or remove the drive from the system.

2nd, run the add new hardware wizard from control panel

Don't you just love "plug-n-play"?

If the CDROM is not on your OS HCL, you may need to go to the mnfr website and download new drivers (but probably not).

Good luck!! JTB

I took a CDROM apart and cleaned the little lens the laser uses and it worked fine after that. Basically I just took off the cover and cleaned it with some alcohol and Q-tips. Put it back together and it worked fine. This is all you have to do sometimes if they fail to read a CD or stop reading in the middle. Sometimes it is just dirt on the lens. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Hi there,

the way it sounds to me is that the CD-Rom isn't functioning correctly...

under W98 (SE) it will install any CDROM model no matter what make... I've tried this with 15 or 16 different CD models on one PC... see I salvage a lot out of old PCs and newer ones that People throw away or sell for cheap... to test and resell at a flea market... and I haven't come across one single one that the W98 doesn't recognize... but came across a few that didn't work anymore though...

never the less, it sounds to me like it is a dead one, if the cables and jumpers are correctly set... like a friend of mine's CD-R drive that would work fine as a CD but wouldn't burn a single damn CD-R...

so if you got warranty on the damn thing, take it back for a replacement, or have them check it out if it works proberly or not...

Ben

You cannot install a cd from the add new hardware wizard in Control panel. Either windows finds it or it doesn't.

Look at the drive when you first power on. Does the little light come on? Does the drive spin up? If not it is either dead or not getting power.

Many many thanks to all you kind people who helped
Problem solved. I moved the jumper to master position and D drive reapppeared. I then (why does one, or at least me, always think of doing simple things too late) looked at the old CD and sure enough the jumper is at the left.
Why this CD is master not slave I do not know, indeed I don't even understand what it signifies. However I now have a CD that instantly reads discs without the old jiggling I had to do. Also it is amazingly quiet compared to the old one.
So again many thanks for pointing me in the right direction and I hope you people realise just how helpful and useful tips like these are to the computer dunce like me.
