Hey i was searching the forums for and answer this was the closest thing i got thread750-1293772

well my comp is a one year old dell laptop and the CD/DVD drive E: does not recognize on my computer anymore the light just stays on and will not open or work when i try to open it with the run app

it started only doing this occasionally at first but i would restart comp and it would be fine but now it just doesnt work completely

i get an error message when i start up my computer that says the device can not be recognized, and to push it firmly into the bay and restart my computer but ive tried everything less then opening up the computer and seeing if its something on the inside

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

See if the drive is recognized in BIOS. If not, then make sure that all of the drive's cables are firmly connected. If they're ok, then install a different known working IDE cable. If that does not help, then see if it works in another system. If not, then the drive may be bad.

I had same problem last week, only I have two optical drives and both suddenly disappeared. Didn't show in BIOS either. I ran WinAudit (free tool) and it confirmed the sudden disappearance of both drives.

Opened the case, made sure the cable connections were secure. Closed the case, restarted the computer and all was fixed. Cables seemed fine but I guess something was loose. Hope you have same success.
