Using Windows XP, CD drive will only recognise music files. On trying to open CD via Explorer, message "Please insert a disk" displayed. Right clicking on drive and selecting properties doesn't help. External CD drive connected, worked for a short time, but then same messages appear. Any ideas?

What kind of CD's are you trying to "read" ?Were they "burned" with a utility such as Nero or Roxio?
You may need udf reader sw.Can you read a Microsoft CD or a commercially prepared cd ?

You could try uninstalling your driver for the CD Drive, via Device Manager, reboot, and let Windows rediscover the Drive and Driver.
