Two clients, similar symptoms. Both machines were unprotected by anti-virus.
WinME:
system won't boot up properly anymore. New file on C drive called May17 and I think that's been identified as a problem. System cannot see CD Drive, although it shows up on BIOS startup. Drive cannot be accessed in command line mode either.
Win98
Customer just called. Attempted to install Norton 2004 on win98 machine with no prior protection. Installation called for an upgrade of IE, which customer did, by clicking where it said to (was this a fraud?). After reboot, machine no longer sees CD drive.
I've done google searches. I've got two clients with this same problem. Has someone identified if its a virus, or malware issue?
