I have a combo CD-RW/DVD drive by Samsung. recently, the drive will not eject a CD-RW disk i am using??
The disk is formatted for direct read/write without using software.
Any clues people?

If you start up the computer and, maybe, go into CMOS Setup, will it let you eject there?

If so, then some piece of software is locking the drive once your OS loads.

If not, then you are looking at a hardware problem. Possible causes could be a dead/dying cdrom drive, bad power supply (or power supply lead).

I had one CDROM drive that would not open or close. Come to find out, the 12v lead on the power supply tap to the CDROM drive had worked it's way out. Since 5v was still there, the LED on the CDROM still lit up fine. Mudskipper

In the bottom right hand corner you should have an icon for DirectCD. Right click over the icon and you will get an option to EJECT.

Regards. Running a PC without backups is like driving a car without a seatbealt. Your knack'ed when you crash!

Ah. That could work! Leave it to me to immediately look for a hardware issue!! ;-)

I would imagine that Win98User is correct!!! Mudskipper

I have recently seen a Virus do this!
Scan and repair with Virus software.
You can get the disk out by using the mechanical overide option! when turned off look for a small hole usually just to one side and below the tray, insert a long thing darning needle or similar into the hole, be careful it is inserted squarely, push in untill some resistance is met, push gently and the drive tray should move partially out, enough to pull out by hand, remove disk.
Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Win98User has hit it, it is common for packet writing formatted CDs to only be able to be ejected from DirectCD itself when using the Roxio (Adaptec) software. Does not seem to occur with Nero's InCD Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

At last cost, there's always that little manual eject hole you can push a paperclip into. One HP cd burner drive I had also allowed you to easily pull open the tray with your finger (which came in handy when the early versions of easy cd creater 4 kept crashing). =)

I have run into this issue w/ 3 differend cd rw drives on 2 different machines. All 3 using adaptec/roxio. Also same issue w/ cd rom drive not being able to eject. When working w/ just cd r disk the drives work fine. I am beginning to wonder if there is a issue using cd rw disk in general. My experince is that this issue does not happen everytime.

I am using CD Direct and this only happens with this one disk. I will try some of your suggestions when I get home this evening and reply with my results.
