CD drive vanishes in XP Pro 1

I have an ASUS P4B533 mainboard and an LG 52x cd-rom drive with Win XP pro installed. The drive shows up and operates normally when booted, how ever after installing anything or accessing the drive and then changing CDs the drive will no longer show up in explorer or under my computer. If a new CD is inserted the autorun does not fire. Windows seems to uninstall the CD drive, rebooting fixes the problem until you access the drive and change CDs. I've never run into this before, is it another flakey XP driver?

try diskmgmt.msc see if it is still there and give it a drive letter
