Okay, lightning wiped out my main machine. I was trying to put just an email machine together so I could keep in touch with everybody. I purchased a motherboard combo with processor and memory already installed. I installed XP pro with sp2 and so far so good. Then I tried to run a cd with some drivers and the drive would not recognize the disk. I have a DVD drive, a CD drive, a CD-RW drive, and none of them will recognize a disk. The computer sees the drives and identifies them and even installs them but none of them will recognize a disc. I have a external USB DVD-RW drive and it does the same thing. Just blinks and sits there when a disc is inserted. I can go through Media Player and play a music CD but that is all. I have tried everything I know. Does anyone have a solution?

You installed XP Pro... so that CD worked, right?
I'd guess the CD is bad...

I have tried many CD's and DVD's in the drives and none worked. Not even commercial ones. Then they wioll work in other computers.

Were the drives working properly before the lightning strike? What exactly is the problem you are experiencing? If you put a CD or DVD in the drive it will not spin up, right? If you go to Windows Explorer does the contents of the disc show up there? Is the autorun feature disabled? The drive(s) are reading the CD if you can play music with WMP. See if anything here helps you.

Try the Autoplay Repair Wizard

These drives were not in the machine the lightning hit. I even tried an external usb drive and it does not work. When you put in a disc, it just blinks. In windows explorer, it does not show the contents but it will eject the disc. On the Autoplay tab, the only choices are to play with WMP or open files to view. I tried both of these and neither worked. I ran the autofix on two of the drives and got the same answer. "found problems but could not fix".

You didn't answer if you isn talled using that cd player?

I'm sorry, didn't mean to not answer the question. I installed XP at work on a brand new hard drive. I brought the machine home to use and the drives have not worked since. I ran all the fixes, checked the registry values, and nothing has worked. Yes, the drive worked when I installed XP. Since then I have rebuilt XP thinking it would straighten out any problem it may have developed during installation but no luck.

Missing drives in XP after they worked to install XP also points to a filter value in the registry as a possible problem. Don't know if you've tested for it and I'm not into that much XP to be familiar with where the info may be.
