CCNA lab setup confusion 2

Hi All

Trying to setup a CCNA switching lab. I thought I'd add routing later. I ebayed a 2950T with 2 ethernet GB ports. I was going to look for another one to practise redundant layouts. But then I read that a 2950 can only have one VLAN.

My shop uses a lot of VLANs and I want to understand this. Now 3550s are expensive and hard to find.

Can I have multiple VLANs on my 2950s?
If so do I just buy a 1721 or similar to sit between my two switches?
Last Q - a lot of the ebay switches just have standard image. Can I flash these to enhanced image?

The 2950 can support 1024 Vlans.With the 2 switches you will have to use VTP to sure the vlan info between the switches.Then the 1721 will let you do inter-vlan routing.As far as upgrading the IOS to enhanced image.Yes you can,but the problem is getting the image legally.

Am I correct in assuming I just plug this into my dsl modem?

If I have to buy a router at this stage I'd like to get one that will cover CVoice as well. Will this do IOS 12.31, edge QoS and allow a DMZ for my remote access servers?

Might be a little more to do then just "plug it in"

DSL Reports has a Cisco FAQ with lots of config examples -some for the 1700 router to both setup and secure your router.

As for your questions on CVoice, QoS and setting up a DMZ - most of that will be determined by the IOS you put on the router, and the IOS will be determined by the amount of DRAM and FLASH you have in the router.

I would "Google" Cisco 1721 and READ everything that you can about it BEFORE you buy it and make sure that YOU understand it and are secure with what you are buying!

I have bought lots of Cisco routers on eBay and that is exactly what I always did - that way I knew more about the router then the person selling it! I also always checked what it would cost to MAX out DRAM and FLASH and how easy it was to get the memory.

You can connect the router to you DSL modem with the correct configuration,(NAT or Bridge mode).To do voice you will need a 1751V or a 827-4V depending or your prefered setup.

Yep I realise there's a bit of config ;-) I meant plug-in in terms of physical connections. I found a reasonably priced 1751 and 64 mb of flash ram. It says with WIC-1T. Can anyone confirm that is just for a serial connection. I assume that the connection to the ADSL modem is just ethernet?

Be careful,you will need the 1751V for voice,not the 1751,this one does't come with the PVDM module.But you cn buy it separately.The WIC-1T is for T1 connections.For what you want to do you will need at least 2 ethernet interfaces.

Minue---the WIC-1T I believe is for RS232/V.35 serial connections, like the DB-60 connector---the WIC-T1-DSU/CSU or WIC-T1-DSU-V2 is for T1 connections, like with an RJ-48 connector.

Minue - I'm a bit confused - the product description for the 1751 specifically mentions voice. I thought that any router that supported QoS and H.323 would do it.

The older 2600 seems to support it:

Actually that does lead to another point. Can I get a fxs port in the 1751 to actually plug a phone into. Or should I be looking for another model?

Cisco can be a bit deceptive at some times.Support for voice is one thing.But voice ready is another.The 2600 can support voice but with a NM-V2 module.This module has the PVDM module on the board.The PVDM is the voice proccesor.As mention before the 1751V comes with this module already installed.With the 1750 ,1751 and 1760 you have to buy it apart.
Yes you can get an FXS port off Ebay don't know what's the cost in your country.Here in Europe there are quite cheap.If you where living here I good easily sell you one.

Oh boy I'm still confused. The 1751s for sale all come with a WIC-1T which appears to be some weird WAN serial card. Am I right in assuming that they will still work as a router behind my DSL modem. And is that still OK with the voice stuff. Or do I need a DSL modem WIC that goes into the 1751?

It's not that confusing.Just always try to remember that the world is full of networking technologies to suit different customers.
The reason you see the WIC-1T so often installed in 1751 (and other routers)is mainly because the serial WAN connection (T1 in the USA and E1 in Europe)was once the small to medium size companies choice.Now with the out- burst of ADSL with its low cost and added security (with VPN's) most companies are cutting the cost and making this their WAN connection.The voice will work over serial or ADSL connections even ethernet.
As mention before putting your 1751 behind you DSL router will work fine as a NAT router or you can bridge the DSL modem and make the router handle the ADSL connection.
It's not clear to me,if you want to use the 1751 for lab use or as a VOIP router for your home,to make cheap calls.

Lab use primarily - its just while I'm buying for ccna I'd like to buy something upgradeable for cvoice study. I.E. eventually have two voip capable routers with FXS ports and a couple of analogue phones.

I'm just struggling to understand the price differential e.g. will this let me do the ccna study at a reasonable price and be voip upradeable or am I just paying extra for interfaces I can't use:

How many routers do you have in your lab?If you must buy another router.The price of that 1751 isn't that bad.Just consider that a FXS and a PVDM card will cost around 90 euro's for both on Ebay.A 1751V with FXS installed will cost around 200-220 euro's.So in any case the difference isn't much.Try to do a search before buying to see the difference for the 2 solutions.

Yeesh sorry for the long thread - newb blues. I missed out on the 1751. Looking at a 1721 but what I can't figure out is it came with an ethernet WIC which I need to connect to the dsl modem I assume. There's only one other WIC slot so how do I get FXS and PVDM cards in there?
