I have taken Microsoft MCSE track, one thing that is allowed is to go back, so that you can gauge your time, also, if you see something on a question that tickles your memory about another question you can go back.

I've read that you can not go back on the CCNA exam. Also I have read, there are a lot of simulated questions. My questions! Do you get a normal command line, so that you can do a "conf ?". So that you are questioned on your ability to get the device configured, or is it setup to test you ability to remember the exact command?

On that note, simulated question, can you do a conf t or do you have to spell everything out: configuration terminal?

Thanks, I would much rather now what to expect then to be surprised.

Dane0554,

You are correct - on the CCNA you can not go back on questions.

As for the questions - on the sims - and you can expect from 1-3 on the exam.

You are given a specific task on the routers or switch to configure or troubleshoot - it is just like any of the different sims you can buy on the market - you login to the router and do what they have asked.

On every Cisco exam I have taken the sims acted just like a real router - yes it took "conf ?" but "help" is really not going to help you much in most of the sims I have seen!

Yes you can do "conf t" and all the other "shortcuts" that we all get used to :)

Most are very easy and straight forward - if you know your stuff and have been doings labs they will be easy!

And yes - you need to have a VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING and recall of the IOS commands - you need to know them for all the questions which could involve troubleshooting, "draging" the command in the right order or just a general config question!!!!!!

Get yourself a Cisco Press CCNA book AND Todd L. Sybex CCNA Study Guide - BOTH will have questions that are like what you can expect on the CCNA exam.

Cisco Press tends to give you EVERYTHING you would ever want to know and will NEVER be asked while the Sybex book (does not cover 100% of the exam) but does cover 90 - 95% of it depending on the luck of the draw on your questions :) I always tell people to get the Sybex book because it tends to limit to JUST what you need for the exam - so between the 2 books you will be well rounded.

Also get a good sim or several routers and switches on eBay for hands on labs!

Also check back past posts - many questions are bounced around!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

I agree in your good points about the CCNA exam. I just passed one month ago.

The best thing to do is the really try "hands on" exersises. Many engineers and technicians learns through thier hands. So do all the labs in the CCNA books, not just read. Hands-on labs make you really understand and toubleshooting routers is best to try hands-on.
You may get sims with troubleshooting routers and switches in your CCNA certification exam.

My CCNA certification exam consisted of totally 57 questions. 4 of these were sims, the rest were multiple choice single answer or multiple choice multiple answer questions.

Thanks for the feedback, yep, I've been using Sybex and Cisco books. I purchased NetVisualizer 5. I also have an old 2500 - which I have found is "a good thing"TM. Because some of the NetVisualizer commands don't work like a router...

I have been doing all my labs, I feel fortunate, that if I look up and have a block I can do a ip ? and not have to remember the exact spelling of all the commands.

Thanks!
d.
