When Im on the internet and i try to save a website as a favorite. I get a message the reads:

Unable to create " Website Name "
Catastropic failure.

Whats up with that.

I use Windows XP pro.

Unable to create " Website Name "
Catastropic failure.

Well, if you're spelling it the way it shows on the screen, then it must be a malware infection of some kind.

(unless otherwise stated, you can find each file at
Download, install, and quick scan with the following:
1. Malwarebytes Antimalware
2. SuperAntiSpyware

What AV software are you running? Best options here (my opinion):
FREE:
1. Avira Antivir
2. Microsoft Security Essentials
3. Avast! or AVG

Paid:
1. Avira paid version
2. Eset Nod32
2. Bit Defender or Kaspersky probably next.

Do you have a firewalled router? Really, do you just have a router of any kind? If not, get one - min $15 new, up to $50 or $60 for "run of the mill" ones, and of course there are more expensive models out there.

Do you have a software firewall? If not, try Comodo Internet Secuirty or Online Armor. Comodo gives more pop-ups at first, but is a little stronger (the suite version) than Online Armor.

If that takes care of it, turn off system restore, reboot, re-enable system restore and set a new restore point.

If that doesn't take care of it, you may want to download hijackthis and post a log file here for more specific instructions.

Oh, actually, if you get to the point of needing to post a hijackthis log, then I'd suggest a new post over in:
forum760

And it wouldn't hurt checking out various threads there, as well as the FAQs for other options on scanners, and so forth.

Also, I didn't mention clean-up. In the end, it would be a good idea (and a good idea in general, if you don't already), to run a clean-up app or two. I personally really like (as of now) these 3:
CCleaner
IOBit Advanced System Care
Glary Utilities

All 3 can be downloaded at

Is it just one web page, or is it all web pages? What browser are you using?

Do you have correct access permissions to save to your Favorites folder, see if your user can manually navigate to it and open it, and then click on a file within and see if the links work.

Are you able to save a web page via the "Save As" option in IE?

Have you tested with No Add-ons, or tried resetting IE back to Default settings?

The problem is with all Web pages. Dont know if I have correct access permissions to Favorites folder I dont knowwhere to view them. Yes I can manually navigate to the folder and open it, and then click on a file within connect to the web page but once there i cant connect to any links within the web page. However, yes I can save a web page via the "Save As" option in IE? Dont know what " Add Ons " are or how test with out them. Should I try these things b4 i do the I.E. reset.

This is the normal location of the Favorites folder, C:\Documents and Settings\Usernamexxxx\Favorites, if you can navigate to that location and then click on the links, your Permissions must be OK.

Launch IE via Start Menu\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\ Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

That is what this link talked about.

Resetting IE back to Defaults will remove or disable any Add-ons that you are running.

Another thing you can try is "Safe Mode with Networking".

If life is good from "Safe Mode with Networking", try further elimination of third party causes.

Also create a new user and test with that, you might find that your current user profile is corrupted.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Internet Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Run the System File Checker program from the Start Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
