Hi, I got an 5509 recently, it has WS-5530-E3 Supervisor III running CATos. I am wonder if this switch is capable to run IOS? If yes how I would go about upgrading it. Thanks.

No you cannot run IOS on it , it is catos only. If you get a RSM (layer 3 ) card for the chassis, that runs IOS but the layer 2 side which is what you have is relegated to catos only.

It does have 2 WS-5302 RSM in it. But it probably won't run any new ios right? Hey vipergg, if I want to buy some 2950s for a home lab that will last at least till after CCNP, I should get one with the enhanced image right?

You can get 2924's or even 2912's, which are cheaper. They work just as well for CCNA and CCNP.

The last version for the RSM cards was 12.2.46 which you could get in enterprise version which basically supports everything . Depending on how dram you had on the supervisor the last version was 6.4.21 for the layer 2 catos side . If you can get 2950 like that , thats basically what they use for the tests now .
