hello-
ive got a cisco catalyst 5000 series switch. I just got the switch today (used) and i tried to connect via the console to perform a password recovery and start configuring the switch to my network.

problem:
I connect using hyperterminal after the switch was powered on, hit enter, no response from the switch. I try using another terminal program, same problem. I keep hyperterminal open, and reset the switch, and i can see all the information from the switchs boot process, but when i get to the password prompt, it doesn't respond to enter, or any other character.

anybody else seen where the console can display the switch / routers information but doesn't acknowledge any keystrokes?

thanks!

Looks like flow control. I think you want hardware option set on your terminal emulator. The cable, data rate and parity scheme seem OK as you get tthe startup stuff.

Hello,

I seem to remember from back on the Switching course we used a straight through patch cable as the standard roll over cable didnt work but it works for all other swithes. Try a standard patch lead into the console port and if ive remembered right all the rest should be ok 9600 8 1 no and also the password recovery for the switches if you switch them off and on again (i think between 1-2 secs) you can press enter an the password prompt and it is a blank password. Give it a try and let us so I can see if im talking complete garbage as I only have a 6009 here..

Good luck
Juggy.

The cable to use depends on the Supervisor.
Supp II use "rolled over" with 25pin "D" type plug
Supp III use "cat 5 patch lead" into RJ45 Console port.

PS 2950s & 2924XLs use "rolled over" into RJ45....so much for Cisco standards!

You may have the line configured with a different speed in the NVRAM config file. The default is used up until it is loaded which would explain why you have initial connectivity but then loose it after booting.

Have the system boot into the ROM image (hit break key during first 60 sec (ROM monitor) and have the switch boot to the ROM image.
