I loaded an updated IOS on a new Catalyst 4506. After the reboot, the switch reboots over and over until you press Ctrl+C. This is the message I receive below. I left the old IOS in flash, so I can still go back to it. How do I tell the system to boot from the old IOS? Any idea what is wrong with the image I loaded?

******** The system will autoboot now ********

config-register = 0x2102
Autobooting using BOOT variable specified file.....

Current BOOT file is --- bootflash:c4000-i-mz.121-20.bin
File has bad file magic number: 0x107. Is it a valid file?
boot: can not load "bootflash:c4000-i-mz.121-20.bin"

The switch will automatically reboot now...

Thanks,
Chris

The "File has bad file magic number" error is the hint. You either have a bad, incomplete, or the wrong IOS image installed.

What I've noticed is that, IOS images for Catalyst 4000/4500 series SWITCHES always begins with "cat4000-...".

Your switch is trying to load "c4000-...", which I believe is the IOS image for the Cisco 4000 series ROUTER.

Hi

I got this about the rommon boot command:

boot
Use the boot command to boot up an external process.

boot [-xv] [device][imagename]
Syntax Description

-x
(Optional) Load the image but do not execute.

-v
(Optional) Toggle verbose mode.

device
(Optional) ID of the device.

imagename
(Optional) Name of the image.

From here:

Boot to the old IOS, the delete the failing one.

oj88, when I downloaded the image, I did select an image from the 4000 series. I originally selected one from the 4500 series, but when I tried to load it, I received an error saying that this image doesn't work in this switch. I looked at the old image and it started with "c4000-" so thats why I selected a 4000 image.

eurobadger, I noticed that command yesterday, but I don't know the name of the old image. There is no "show bootflash:" command in rommmon mode to tell me. What is the command to find the name of the images I have in flash?

Thanks for your replies,
Chris

I got the router to boot from the old image. If you type "boot" with no options, it will boot from the first image in flash, which luckily was the image that works. Now all I have to do is find the right image for the 4506.

Chris

Whenever I try to load an image from the 4500 series, I get this error...

Cisco4506#copy tftp bootflash:
Address or name of remote host []? 192.0.1.60
Source filename []? c4500-i-mz.121-20.bin
Destination filename [c4500-i-mz.121-20.bin]?
Accessing tftp://192.0.1.60/c4500-i-mz.121-20.bin...
%Warning: File not a valid executable for this system
Abort Copy? [confirm]

The image that didn't work from the 4000 didn't give me any errors during the installation.

Hi

Not that you need it, but rommon > 8 dir flash: ought to work.

EB

Thanks, I'll remember that the next time the switch doesn't boot:)

Whats with the "8" though?

Which image should I load for a 4506? It doesn't accept the images I tried to load from the 4500 series, and the image from the 4000 series crashed the switch.

Chris

Are you meeting the DRAM requirements for the new IOS image?

Burke

Yes. I'm only tring to upgrade from 12.1.13 to 12.1.20 using just the IP feature set.

Chris

Sorry

I got the rommon output from a router, and the '8' is the number of the entry in the list of commands, so when it goes in to rommon the prompt is 'rommon 1 >' and the number increments on each command entered. I guess the switch is the same.

It just ended up with the 8 the wrong side of the > 'cos my fingers don't work.

EB

haha, thats what I thought happened, but I wasn't sure because of the 8 to the right of the >

Hi Chris

I will try to type this properly.

I had a look on CCO. All the IOS for Cat4xxx I can find start with cat4000........
The c4000.... and c4500.... are for end-of-life routers.

Also I cannot find (might be that the eyes are going too) release notes for 12.1 (20). Nearest is for (19) at

According to the IOS upgrade planner tool, (19) is the latest in the 12.1 IOS line for cat4000, and the exact file depends on the type of supervisor card you have.

For SUP 2 plus it has cat4000-i9s-mz.121-19.EW.bin
and for SUP 3 or 4 cat 4000-is-mx.121-19.E.bin. These both need 256 MB RAM & 64 MB flash according to the planner, although the actual file size is around 8.5 MB

Thanks, I got it going with the cat4000-i5s-mz.121-19.EW.bin image.

We have a SUP IV engine. The reason I ran into this whole mess in the first place was a stupid mistake on my part. I looked at the installed image and thought it said "c4000", but it really said "cat4000", so I was looking for similarly named images. Just a dumb mistake on my part.

Thanks for your help.
