I am a Marine and in the field right now, I just ran out of cat 5 but managed to scrounge up some cat 3 cable. But I don't know how far it will carry a signal. I need to know this before I tell my Captain yes or no. So my question is, how far will cat 3 go? thanks

I don't know offhand, but you can find out by using a cable tester. You really ought to have one anyway.

It depends on several factors, what type of signal(MHz), voltage used, transmitting equipment and receiving equipment. The assumption is that you wish to substitute CAT3 cable in place of CAT5. This will only work in a very low speed data network such as 10baseT. If you try to push 100MHz it will fail to pass the signal without errors in the data.

Hmmm this thread is pretty old ...anyway...

There's a variant of 100BaseT called 100Base-T4 wich allows to get about 100 Mbit/s over a CAT 3 cable. It uses all 4 twisted pairs. It is a bit more complex to describe it here I guess....at least because I don't know all the words I have to use in english.

If you search for more information about this you may visit and search for "CAT 3 specifications" or something like that...
