Last night I installed Nero 7 essentials on one of my machines. The installation itself went very well but........
after the installation the machine could not find any of my DVD writers. Ok I thought a million to one chance that two drives packed up. I pulled another two drives from a backup computer and installed them. The new drives worked ok for 5 minutes or so but would not show up again after a reboot. Now this odds of DVD drive failures seemed to be to high. As I tested the drives in a 3rd computer they could not be installed. Well after much head scratching I removed Nero 7 and downloaded flash utilities from 3 different drive manufacturers. Took me many hours to find the correct versions. I re flashed the firmware in all four drives. They showed up ok in the test machine. I then removed Nero 7 from the first computer, installed Nero 6, reinstalled the drives and all was fine again.

So I do not blame Nero, but something funny did happen along the way to overwrite the drives rom. The original install disk was an original cd from Ahead, not a copy. So friends be careful with Nero 7.

Jurgen

[red]I've been having the same problem with Nero 7. At first I thought it was my drives or computer but then I saw a post on site saying that if Nero doesn't recognize your drive as being lightscribe (which both of mine are) then it will hide the lightscribe function from you making it appear that it isn't seeing either drive at all even though you can still burn DVDs on them...you just can't burn your labels until it sees them as lightscribe. I found out that if I reboot or turn off and restart system when it does this that it will see both drives for appx. two labels before it hides them again. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution....if so please advise.[/red]

My solution was to buy Ashampoo Burning Studio. No complaints here.
