Career Direction JDE World 7.3

Hi,

I have been offered a position within a company that plans to implement JDE World 7.3 during the next year. One reservation I have with the role is that I have been told is that the system is now quite old. Is this true? How widely used is JDE World 7.3?

In terms of the technology on which JDE World 7.3 executes how similar is this to the technology that is used to run JD World 9.1, Oneworld, enterpriseone etc.

There seems to be quite a few job opportunities currently for JDE but this seems to be other flavours either later versions of world or oneworld and enterpriseone. Further down my career path how relevant would experience in World 7.3 be if I would like to pursue a job in JD World 9.1, JD OneWorld or Enterpriseone?

World 7.3 runs on an AS400. Green Screen, RPG Coding. Question is, how comfortable are you going to that platform. It uses IBM DB400 as the database. No Oracle, NO DB2, NO Microsoft SQL. Physical and Logical files. Again how comfortable are you??

I have had experience of IBM UniData which seems to be from a similar era so getting to grips with technology shouldn't be a problem. Anyway the role is not a developer's role it is more an analyst / project management.

How widely used is 7.3 now a days?

Is the AS400 technology the basis for all versions of World?

Yes World Software (the version), is exclusively AS400. Now using IBM and other "add-ons", you can give a mouse look and fell to the interface, but under the hood,, it is AS400, green screens. The thing about the World version, when you needs lots of data pushed,, the AS400 is the machine. Low bandwidth, because of just passing green screen info, back and forth, easy to troubleshoot, difficult to get data passed up or down to other databases. You have to understand what is going on. For Financial institutions for example, it is the machine of choice. Most World users have somewhat "static", requirements., and the software fits them well. Edwards has lots of modules and programs to give a user what they need, be them home builder, or manfacturing. 5+ years ago,, Microsoft ran its financials on an AS400. Story goes they replace their machine with 100 NT 4.0 servers, worked for a year,, and then went back to the AS400. Spinning the data center off to a separate compnay.

Is the AS400 database a true relational database? I have had experience with UniData (now supported by IBM) this is a mutli valued database which can be awkward to deal with.

you can "join" files togather,, as long as the common element is there. You can create "logicals",, ie views. You can define a physical file,, as a nonkeyed sequential, and then create a logical based on a key structure, which can be unique per record, or contain duplicates. The tools to use are just somewhat different.
