I have been with a large company for about 5.5 years. In this time, I have made to position changes. I seem to wear several hats, but the one that seems to fit is training. I do not have a background of a trainer, but I have assisted in training initiative with my current employer for about 3 years. I want to move ahead, but there is no "Trainer Title" or related position. I am not called a trainer in the current position, but my job is 100% training. I am currently doing a little self-analysis. What are the qualifications of a trainer or the educational background to market myself in this arena? The training that I assist in is soft skills, business acumen, new hire, and related proprietary tool training.

The company I'm working at is using "Lominger competencies" to quantify/categorize strengths/weaknesses, etc.
I've scanned some of them, looks worthwhile. Of course, I'm sure there are lots of other approaches and resources.
Look at job postings and requirements mentioned. Look at schools offering programs in those areas.
Let us know how it goes!

Hello,

Companies are turning more and more to online electronic training. It sounds like a nice idea, but people seem to actually prefer people. Have you ever seen someone take a computer screen on a date? I don't think so. Companies don't know what to do with trainers as a department, but they need them more and more because things are changing too fast. You sound like you may have the skills to go outside your company and start teaching business skills. Look at that, or begin to train a group of people within your company to do what you do. Eventually, a good quality group of trainers will be given important and crucial work. Keep the people skills. Technology can be outsourced easier than people skills can be.
