Captured Printer ports in XP pro

Anyone know how to do this, possibly a policy or registry setting:

I need to capture LPT1 or 2 to a network printer in XP Pro running on a Domain, thats not the problem.

from cmd : net use LPT1: \\server\printer /persistant:yes

but trying this with a domain user account I get challenged for a username and password for the print server, if the domain user group or username is added to the local admin group on the PC it works fine, but I don't want to give users these rights as it screws with the idea of tieing down the group policy in the first place.

any ideas on a single or set of policies I could use to get the same effect with out adding users to local admin, I've taken a look but couldn't find anything relevent.

Cheers Simon.

Here is a idea but it kinda goes around the print server on a XP pro PC, Map the LPT port as you were in your post that will add the print driver to the XP box, next do not run a test page then goto ports add a TCP port with just the IP address of the Printer this should allow the user to print directly to that printer but this will bypass the print server so not sure if this is what your looking for.
Well good luck..

Cheers for the reply, but it's not quite what I'm after, it's so that users can print from an old DOS shell program which can only print to LPT1 or 2, so I need to capture the printers path to a LPT1/2 port and leave the driver on windows alone, any printer will do but normally an HP LJIII assigned to LPT1/2

It can be done, but the Net use statement only works if your a local admin.

The search still goes on
