Hi all,

I have just bought a cheap philips cdrw for occasional backup of data. The drive installed great and windows recognised it without a problem but for some reason I cannot write anything to the drive..

I have tried using 2 different burning packages (Nero + Easy CD creator) and both give me different results but none will write any data to it..

Nero gives me errors saying "End of user area of this track" and also a few others that I cannot quite remember.

Easy CD creator tells me that the data was written sucessfully but when I check the drive, there is no data there..

I have tried this with over 10 disks so I am pretty sure they are not the problem..

Any suggestions appreciated.. Wullie

....not sure if this is the case, but i've talked to a few people who have used Easy CD Creator for the first time and what happened was they formatted their blank CDs to be used by DirectCD, the extra application that comes with ECC. If you have done this to your CDs, it may explain the problems you are having. CDs DO NOT need to be formatted before they can be written to. DirectCD is an application that uses your CDR like a 650-700 MB floppy-drive, allowing you to drag-drop files onto it - but once you have formatted a CD to be used with DirectCD, it cannot be used normally anymore...

Well, DirectCD is actually included with ECC. When you install ECC, it also installs DirectCD. Also, after ECC is installed, the moment you put a blank CD in your burner it will ask you if you want to format it to be used by DirectCD... (until you disable this)

...but it sounds like your problem is elsewhere...

It is possible that the pack of blank CDs you bought are not compatible with your burner...have you tried at least 1 other brand to test this theory?

Hi mate,

The software was on a disk supplied with the cdrw.
When you run set up it asks what you would like to install, both have seperate installers..

I have not tried any other disks as I don't currently have access to any since it is now 1 am here but I am pretty sure they should be compatible as it was the salesman that suggested them.. Wullie

Just thought I'd mention the obvious here...

When using Easy CD Creator, check the options before you burn. Just make sure that you're not running a Test burn, which might explain why it said that it completed successfully but with no data written.

Are you making music or data CDs? What is your disk configuration---Master/Slave, etc.? Turn off virus scan software and end task on stuff in the background, also. I have a CD burner that doesn't work well as "master'. It prefers to be a "slave"---I have no idea why. If I use it as master I make a lot of coasters, I have it set up as slave now and it works fine. Do you have "DMA" selected in Device Manager for this drive? It needs to be "DMA".
Also, if you are using a different CD-ROM to read the disk you burned, you may need to install the UDF reader from Roxio's web site to make the CD-ROM read the Roxio UDF format. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Hi all,

Don't ask me what I did but it worked!! [roll2]

nobrain,

This is only data that I am backing up, websites etc. I have it set up as slave, DMA is selected and nothing else was running at the time.. I tried the both cd-roms to read the disk but both showed up as empty.. Now both drives read the disk with no problems..

Well it wasn't too bad, only wasted 23 disks and about 6 hours getting this sorted.. LOL

Thanks a lot to everyone that helped, you all get a star each.. I really appreciate it.. Wullie
