Can't view highlighted text

I have a user who created a Word document and highlighted text within that document. He sent it to another user (at a different location) via e-mail. The recipient cannot see the highlighting in the document. He tells me there is a checkmark under Tools, Options, View, Show, Highlight. Anybody have other ideas?

One thing to try is search for Highlight: Ctrl + F for Find, make sure find box is empty, click on Format, click on Highlight. If highlighting is found, then do a replace of Highlight with Highlight. It defaults to whatever the current highlight color is.

Could the document have been sent as RTF?

The document was not sent as RTF. But the 2 users involved were able to work around the problem and said to close the call. I am going to let it drop since the problem is on a PC that I do not have ready access to.
