Outlook 2000 automatically makes it so you can't open attachments with certain extensions. Does anyone know how to get around this? Sara

Which files extensions can't you open ? If they're .dat files these are usually signatures which have been attached to incoming mail. If they're .vcf files they will be the digital business cards which can be added to e-mail messages to positively identify the sender. You can't open either unless you have Outlook 2K and then they come in as they should as proper signatures and business cards.

Hope this helps.

Outlook's help files tell you which ones can't be opened.

They are .ade .adp .bas .bat. chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .exe .hlp .hta etc...

The one I'm asking the question about is .scr - a screen saver my boss sent me.

Any ideas? Thank you.

Check your antivirus solution and see if it is denying the running of programs from email attachments.

This is what Outlook's help file says:

Attachment file types blocked by Outlook

There are two levels of attachment security. Access to level 1 files is blocked and can't be changed. When you receive an attachment with a level 2 file type, you will be prompted to save the file to your hard disk. If you use Microsoft Exchange Server, your administrator can add and remove file types for both levels of e-mail security. If a file type is added to both levels, it will be treated as a level 1 file type.

Which service release is installed on Outlook 2000? I ran into this problem when I first installed SR2 onto Outlook 2000. I found out that SR2 installs a security patch that blocks access to many file extensions that have been known to carry viruses.

To correct the problem I did a complete uninstall of Outlook 2000 and then reinstalled it. I am currently using SR1 and have no problem accessing any files. When I try to open those extensions previously blocked by SR2 I am presented with a screen reminding me that these types of files can carry viruses and am given the option of saving the file or opening it. Saving the file allows my AV software to scan it.

I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

Thank you for the post. Today I installed Office XP on my computer. It is the same way as 2000. Do you think that could still be my problem? Sara
