He everyone

here is the problem:

We have one BCM that we need to upgrade from 3.7 to 4.0 using the upgrade CD Nortel provides. The thing is, after i enter the IP of the system and the password and upload the license file I get these two messeges

Problem configuring FTP server on BCM.

FTP server cannot be started on BCM. contact support for resolution.

I'm connecting directly to the system and I'v done upgrades before and they went fine with me. I also tried Precheck tool and got the same messages. The weird thing I have another BCM connected to this system and had the same problem.

I know imaging might be a solution but I'm looking for alternatives since its so difficult to use imaging in this site.

Thanks

Was your 3.7 system fully patched? I found that sometimes loading the latest Cumulative Patch helps.

Are you connected in lan 1 or 2? lan 1 is the good one for this upgrade.

Also, try powering down for 5 minutes and then try the upgrade again.

Actually the system not fully patched but Ill try to fully patch it.

I tried LAN 1 through the switch and LAN 2 directly to the system but does it make a difference?

I tried powering down but it didn't help : (

I thought since the problem is in two systems maybe there is some kind of configration like firewall is enabled or somthing but I couldn't find anything related to the issue

yes it make a difference, you have to connect directly on lan 1. If no, the upgrade dosen't work.It is in the upgrade docs.

As well, make sure to use version 2.21g of the bcm 4.0 upgrade and deleting all the cdr files does help as well.
Do a search in previous posts for that step.
Have you tried with another laptop?

I have had this problem twice and both where fixed by manually starting the ftp service in element manager before starting the upgrade again..

If its not broke tweak it..

How do I manually start the FTP service in bcm 3.7 before starting the upgrade?

I can not remember where the option is i will dig out my docs later..

If its not broke tweak it..

Enable telnet in your bcm. Telnet in the bcm.Go to option 7 "command line" then at the c:\ prompt type net start msftpsvc. It will take few seconds and say "successfully started". To stop it do net stop msftpsvc.
