cant update windows 1

by mistake i put this post as a response on a different thread, sorry.

when i try to update windows i get this line..
"Windows Update is downloading and installing the updated software..."
after that i get this line..
"New Windows Update Software Required"
i click on "update now" and its go back to the first window
and so on... like a loop.

btw, few weeks ago i try to update and i got a problem note, "i need to change the activeX to minimum" or somthing like that..
because i got a flash problems (cant see site using flash),
i removed some installed programs to try to fix it, but nothing happen with the flash problem, still have flash problem. but i found that the first problem with the update
its no longer exist, only the note with loop...

how can i fix this (maybe both) problem?

I have the same "New Windows Update Software Required" loop with Windows XP Home - a legit registered copy I might add.

I've not been able to find a solution that worked.

Found the following <see below> via web on a Dell users forum which I tried - but no joy - couldn't install the inf file successfully. May be worth others trying.

I have not yet installed service pak 1 on my 8200. When I go to the Microsoft site and try to access the download I keep getting cycled through this message which tells me to update the microsoft download manager. I can't ever get to the actual place where the recommended downloads should appear. Don't know if I am doing something wrong or what. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

Apparently Microsoft is making changes to Windows Update and made this statement: &quot; The week of November 7th, 2002, the Windows Update site will be refreshed with an updated version.&quot; It looks like they got an early start.

The following is courtesy of Maurice N and was posted in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup in response to several people having the same problem as you are.

Be certain you are following all of the prompts. There are 2 separate downloads & 2 sets of Eulas & accepts, & such.Then at the end, it prompts you to click the &quot;restart&quot; button so that the changes are finalized into the system & the registry.

Only if you truly believe it is in a never-ending loop, then consider:
There is (quite possibly) either a grunged entry in the system registry,
or a mismatched pair of controls (dll's ).

Delete * IUCTL.DLL * and * IUENGINE.DLL * from %windir%\system32\dllcache (if they are there).
Delete * IUCTL.DLL * and * IUENGINE.DLL * from %windir%\system32 folder.
Note: On XP, System File protection will prompt you to place the XP CD on; do not do that but
choose to cancel or skip that part.

In Regedit (very carefully )
Delete the sub-key &quot;SelfupdateStatus&quot; *IF* it is present in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\IUControl
key.
Exit out of Regedit.

Go to this link to get the latest win update controls

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab

and save them to your desktop , or better yet, save into a new unique folder.

Extract the cab by:
1. Right clicking on the iuctl.cab
2. Select &quot;Extract&quot; -- point to %windir%\system32 folder and click Ok

3. Use Windows Explorer, and &quot;right click&quot; on the * IUCTL.INF * file.
4. Select &quot;install&quot;. Make sure it has a clean/good finish.
5. Logout and reboot the system. This last step is important.

On XP & Win2000 the IUCTL.DLL & IUENGINE.DLL should go into %windir%\system32.

Thanks so much for getting that info over here from the Dell forum. I'd been battling this MS Windows Update problem for a couple of months now and the .cab installation solution worked perfectly!
