I was Running my 4V on Win 3.1 (Parrallel Port LPT1). Then got a new computer with Win98SE. Still running 4V on LPT1, and a scanner on USB.
Then Hooked up an inkjet to parrallel LPT1 and put the 4V and the scanner on USB (Only 2 USB Ports)(Using a Belkin Parrallel to USB cable for the 4V). Everything was working great for a long time.
Then got a HP1220C PS. Had to hook that to USB so dumped the other InkJet and Hooked the 4V back up to parrallel.

Now I'm trying to hook the 4V back to USB but it doesn't work. Tried to update drivers. Downloaded the hplj4_ps_en drivers but when I try to update the drivers it asks me for the Win98SE disk and then says it can't find any drivers for my printer.

My computer has crahsed since I originally had the 4V on USB and I had to formatt my hard drive and reinstall windows. Apparently the drivers that used to be on my computer when it was new aren't there anymore. I've tried the Win98SE disk, the resource disk that I got from Dell and downloaded the udated drivers from HP. The only thing I can get it to work with is the original Win3.1 drivers on parrallel port.

When I look in Explorer, I can see the hplj4_ps_en that I downloaded and drivers for the 4V listed but when I go to update drivers and browse for the 4V drivers it will only open up as far as Win9X and doesn't list the 4V drivers.

I'm not a beginner but I'm no computer genius either. If someone could help me I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks
Ron

I think you need to extract the DL file (double click the exe.)that you got from HP. Then when you browse, browse to the .inf within that extracted file

Jomama: Thank You for your reply.

I'm not sure what you mean extract the DL file.

Here's what I did:

The file I downloaded from HP is a Zip File. I unzipped it and installed it. It is located under C: in Win Explorer.

The file address is: C:/hp_win2k/lj4/ps/Win9X

When I try to update drivers, this is as far as I can browse.

However, If you click on Win9X in the left hand column of Explorer. All the drivers show up in the right hand column:

fonts.mf_
hp4m_v4.ppd
hp4ml_v4.ppd
hp4mp_v4.ppd
hp4plus4.ppd
hp4si_v4.ppd
Hpdcmon.dl_
Iconlib.dl_
Oem95
pscript.dr_
pscript.hl_
pscript.in_

I believe the driver for the HP4V and the HP4MV are the same but I can not browse this far when trying to update drivers. I can only browse to Win9X and these drivers are not listed in the browse window.

Do you have any further information that might help me?

Thanks again for your reply

I'm not sure what that driver is, I think it is a program. but go here Hmmm thats kind of a long URL but its leads to a 4V driver for98. I DL it, double clicked to extract. It extracted to a folder it created called LJ366en. The first file is a .inf and I could browse to it in add printers wizard.
Be sure and get the LJ 4v for 98 (pcl 5e)
If the link doesnt work go to
HP.com>Support and drivers> HP 4V.
Good luck

Jomama,

I will give that link a try.

Thanks for Your help.

Well Jomama,

Thanks for the help. I did finally get the printer driver you suggested to install. (It wasn't pretty).

After installing it the printer seemed to work OK, except when I tried to open a couple of my files in Publisher it gave me the following error message:

This Program has performed an illegal action and will close. etc...
Said it caused an Page Fault in Kernell32.dll or something like that.

Some of the files opened fine, others of the same nature didn't.

Had to uninstall the printer and re-install the old drivers (Win3.1 drivers). Then the files opened fine.

Oh well, guess I'm stuck with the old drivers.

Thanks anyway
Ron
