Hi
I got a system that came from a LAN workgroup with W2000 Prof, and it has an outdated Norton Antivirus that I wish to uninstall.
Everytime I attempt to uninstall it ask for a password which no one can remember. So I want to delete the whole program but that too was unsucessful with the following error;
"cannot delete clisan.dll acccess is denied. The source file may be in use". The same with "vpshell2.dll"

How can i get rid of it.
Thanks

rename the file vpshell2.dll to vpshell2 and reboot and proceed

Can't rename got the following error"cannot delete vpshell2. the file is being used by Windows"
Other suggestions?
Thanks

boot into safe mode and try to remove it

In case eyec's suggestion doesn't work:

Open the command console:

Start > Run "cmd" (without quotes), then close Explorer:

Task Manager>Processes>explorer.exe <End Process>

You should now be able to delete the file using the command line.

eye is correct, boot up in safe mode. You might be abel to unistall just by booting up that way. You should be able to remove the .dll formt eh file name at the very least.

Hi
Did melmitts suggestion program seem to do its thing and proceed to reboot got following error;
16 Bit Window subsystem
C:\Progra~1\symantec\s32EVNT1.dll. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL initialization. Choose close to terminate the application.

This Norton has 7 lives. It is still in the system.

This info might give you a clue, on the taskbar if I right click on the Norton icon it give me a choice of opening symantec antivirus, and if I click on that it tries to install the program then an error come up;
Symantec antivirus Client
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or another removable disk that is not available.
Insert the Symantec antivirus disk and click OK.

That AV is on the server this PC come from.

But I am going to try the other sugestions and report back.
Thank you all.

Norton is probably still in the registry.

Start > Run "regedit" (without quotes)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Check if there's an entry for Norton and delete it.

Always backup the registry before editing!

OK
Start in safe mode and manually delete all norton AV and empty trash before reboot.Got rid of it alright but,
after reboot and loading all the programs it still come up with this error;

16 Bit Window subsystem
C:\Progra~1\symantec\s32EVNT1.dll. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL initialization. Choose close to terminate the application.

What is this, need to get rid of this.
there is still a Symantec SideAct and ACT program in the system but the Act cannot be run.
