Can't undo read-only C: volume 1

Windows 2000 Professional (Admin rights) won't defragment my C: volume[b/] (primary HD partition) because its set READ-ONLY[b/].

Never-the-less, it defrags my D: volume (secondary HD) and E: volume (primary HD partition) as usual.

I haven't a clue as to how this situation has arisen apparently spontaneously... because I didn't deliberately set that C:READ-ONLY state!

I'm therefore in the dark as to the way to restore volume C: to its normal READ-WRITE[b/] state.

Ideas anyone?

If you right-click the C: drive and choose properties, then check out the Sharing and the Security tabs, what permissions are set there?

Share name = C$
Comment = Default share

C: Properties | Security =

Administrators (Allow) = Full Control {et seq}
Administrators (Deny) = {none}

Everyone (Allow) = Read & Execute, List…, Read
Everyone (Deny) = Write
problem solved by removing this caveat

Self (Allow) = Full Control {et seq}
Self (Deny) = {none}

SYSTEM (Allow) = Full Control {et seq}
SYSTEM (Deny) = {none}
