I'm working on an old HP apollo system running hp/ux 8.0. I can telnet and ftp out from it to my Solaris machines but I can't telnet to the HP machine. inetd.conf looks like it
has the correct entries. when I check the processes, I can't see telnetd running and I can't determine why it is
not running.

Hi,

telnetd doesn't run all the time, but is spawned by inetd when a call to port 23 is made, similarily ftp works the same but using the port specified for it in /etc/services.

You haven't said at which point telnet and ftp fails, I guess that you are not getting a login prompt. Check that it isn't just taking a long time to get a prompt because it could be a name resolution issue. Again if telneting OK using IP address but not by using hostname then you probably have a name resolution problem.

If neither hostname or IP address works then.....
I would first check that ftp and telnet are defined in the proper syntax in /etc/services.
Check /var/adm/inetd.sec to make sure that the services have not been denied.

If you are getting a login prompt but you can't login then check that user exists and entry is OK in /etc/passwd for non-root user and that you have the correct password.

Lastly check for any messages being to written to /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and/or mail.
Post any messages here!!!

Good Luck

Clare,
I didn't even bother trying hostname, I will only use the ip
of the system.
Checked etc/services, it's setup correctly
inted.sec had no entries for ftp or telnet
When I try to telnet the HP box I only get a flashing cursor, finally I get this error: "unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out"
no log in mail
syslog only shows that telnet service, etcetera was added.

still stumped on this one......

FIXED !

the system paniced earlier and when it came back up, I forgot to add in the default route, I realized this after
I tried to ping the system, in addition their was no
/etc/defaultrouter file which also must contain the gateway ip.
When I fixed these two problems I was able to telnet and
ftp from my solaris machines, however it takes two to five
minutes to get a login prompt, after that it responds just
fine. I wonder why it takes so long...

How do I know what my login and password are for Telnet or how can I get one?
