Hi,
Does anyone know what the following error means?

NL-00051: internal error code, arguments: [302], [1], [], [], [], [], []

I can't seem to start the listener. Every time I get the above error. This is an Oracle 8i system on a Windows XP OS.

thanks

Do you have access to metalink?

fact: Oracle Net 8.1.5
fact: TNS Listener
fact: Solaris Operating System (SPARC)
symptom: Listener hangs on startup
symptom: Errors appear in listener.log
symptom: NL-00051: internal error code, arguments: [302] [1] [] [] [] [] []
symptom: The error repeats until the tnslsnr process is killed or the
filesystem fills to capacity.
symptom: More than 10 Network Interfaces are defined
symptom: The Unix command 'ifconfig -a' shows 11 or more interface
definitions.
change: Added a new network interface definition to the Unix o/s.
cause: <Bug:853642> DATABASE & LISTENER FAIL TO START WHEN OVER 10
NETWORK INTERFACES ARE DEFINED

fix:

Upgrade to a higher version, it is fixed in 8.1.6.

Workaround:

To determine the number of interfaces defined on the system use the following
command:

# ifconfig -a

lo0: flags=849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 8232
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
hme0: flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 127.1.2.3 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 127.1.2.255
ether 8:0:20:93:c5:c3
hme0:1: flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 127.2.3.4 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 127.2.3.255
.
.
.

If over 10 interfaces are listed some will have to be removed until the count
is 10 or fewer.

Only the superuser may remove network interfaces. It is up to the system
administrator to determine which interfaces, if any, may be removed.

Metalink does say the platform is 'generic' so I guess it applies here :)

Ah. It's just that Solaris is mentioned specifically in the Metalink extract. Personally, I think I'd upgrade!!

I thought I was at 8.1.7 on this server (my PC), but I looked again in the init.ora file and it is at 8.1.0. Yes, this is running on windows XP and no, I don't have access to metalink. This is a real sore spot for me, because I am suppose to be supporting about 15 oracle databases, yet I don't have a metalink account. These databases are all from various vendors and the vendors hold the metalink account, yet I am suppose to support these databases because my company did not purchase the DBA support from the vendors.
Thanks, I'll try upgrading.

init.ora file contains compatibility information, not software version. There's no such product as 8.1.0. Besides there's no 8i version certified on XP, thus I'm a bit surprised how your vendor could suggest a non-certified combination for production system.

Regards, Dima
