Hi,
Background: I've just patched my test database from 10.2.0.1.0 => 10.2.0.4.0, everything seemed to work except the upgrade for Enterprise Manager which failed. I closed out of dbua, did some research, updated the Java files in my oracle home and then ran the upgrade for Enterprise Manager manually. I don't even know if this has worked or not, i assume not since Enterprise Manager doesn't work. But on the other hand OPatch says that dbcontrol is now on 10.2.0.4.0

Symptoms: can't start dbconsole, can't log into enterprise manager home page, can't start the dbconsole service as it is no longer there.
On the command line when i try "emca -config dbcontrol db" it says that dbcontrol is already configured for the database - so i didn't proceed with this.
If i trusted in oracle gui's i'd run the DBUA again and it would just upgrade the EM component - but i doubt it would work like that.
This error made me wonder about whether dbcontrol was case sensitive: "testbed.company.co.uk" Does not Match Hostname = "TESTBED.COMPANY.CO.UK" so have created an alternative tnsnames file in block capitals, but doesn't make any difference.
Has anyone been through this one before?
i have a production database that is up but i can't look at it, i have been onto metalink all day but they wont class it as severity 1 and they have't reponded yet. But the automated backups have stopped running so now i'm running without a safety net.

The fact that your service is absent is telling.
I take it you're on Windows if your using DBUA?
Can you 'tnsping' the DB OK?
Drop the configuration files and repository with the following at the command prompt:

emca -deconfig dbcontrol db -repos drop

then run this to create afresh:

emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create

Ignore the email and SMTP server questions as they're optional and can be entered when you have the EM running.
The port for EM console may have changed so any shortcuts you had will have to be updated.
Check the logs for any issues:
'{ORACLE_HOME}\cfgtoollogs\emca\<ORACLE_SID>\'

hi kutz13

yep, running oracle on windows.
and yes, thanks for the tip - this is in fact what i did.

got the patch process sussed now so that when i did the upgrade on the production server the enterprise manager got upgraded at the same time :).
