I downloaded apache 1.3.27-ppc-whatever-linux22 from the apache site.

I installed apache in the default dir (/usr/local/apache)

I went inside the httpd.conf file and kept all the defaults except ServerAdmin which i changed to
support@<my host name>

and Servername which i changed to <my host name>

didn't touch anything else. I went into /usr/local/apache/bin and type: apachectl start
an error said: bash:apachectl:command not found
then typed: ./apachectl start
an error said /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd: cannot execute binary file
./apachectl start: httpd could not be started.

whats going on?

yes the httpd has execute permission. I ran it from root and it had full permission.
