Hi,
I'm having trouble getting my desktop PC to share files and printers with my laptop. I have a cable internet connection. I have a cable modem and have it hooked up to a router. I connect to that with my laptop with a wireless adaptor.

I can share my laptop files with my desktop but not vice versa. When I'm on my desktop and I click to share the printer it says that it can't accept the settings and it also will not let me share any of the files that are on my desktop.

Everything appears to be correct. Like I said, I'm sharing everything on my laptop fine and can view them on my desktop, but I can't share my desktop files with the laptop.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

hello

are you being able to ping your Desktop from your laptop and visa versa?
if so do the folloing:

try Networking Wizard for sharing folders and printers located under network connections.

if you can't ping try this, or just add the abblity for ICMAP inside your firewall, for testing .

windows Firewall under control panal must be off.

try this microsoft LINK

cheers

I know this sounds obvious, but have you run the network setup wizard on both computers?

The simplest solution is the best!

... it says that it can't accept the settings..

For the over 2,000 error messages used by Windows Networking this is not one of them.

From the Laptop: Start, Run, cmd
net view \\name_of_Desktop

Write the error number and error message text down and report back to the forum.

In addition, please indicate:

The operating system and service pack level of each.
Firewall software, Antivirus, VPN client if used.

E.G.:
Desktop, XP Pro, XP firewall, Norton AV, no VPN

I don't know if this makes any difference but when I run the set-up wizard I selected for the best option that describes my computer as "this computer connects to the internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the internet directly or through a network hub.

I have SP2 on both computers and both have XP Home addtion. I have a linksys router. I turned the firewall off on both the d/t and the l/t. I run the home network wizard and the wireless network setup wizard. The only other thing on both PC's is Norton 05 with Worm protection turned off.

When I run net view 192.168.1.100 from my wireless l/t to my d/t I get system error 53 has occured. The network path was not found.
When I ping 192.168.1.100 from l/t to d/t I get ping request could not find host \\192.168.1.100. Please check the name and try again.

The same thing happens when I ping \\192.168.1.101 and when I run net view \\192.168.1.101 from the d/t to the laptop.

When I click to view workgroup computers from my laptop I can see my laptop name, but when I click to view workgroup computers from my desktop I get "MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact adm. of this server to find out if you have access permission. List of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I connect with a cable modem using the linksys router as I said above and the internet is working fine of both the d/t and the wireless l/t.

I'm doing somthing dumb I know, but thanks for the help.

Chris

I also have Spybot Search and destroy running on both PC's. I have Windows firewalls turned off also.

Thanks

The problem is with user rights assignments -- permissions -- on both computers.

The Guest account settings in Control Panel | User Accounts has nothing to do with networked access. They determine whether someone can log on as "Guest" at the keyboard.

If the desktop computer runs Windows XP Professional:

1. Click Start | Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.
2. Click Local Policies.
3. Click User Rights Assignment.
4. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is included.
5. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included.
6. Click Start button, Run, and enter: net user guest /active:yes

If the desktop computer runs Windows XP Home Edition, the "secpol.msc" program isn't available. To make the required user rights assignments:

1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools from
2. Click Start | All Programs | Windows Resource Kit Tools | Command Shell.

3. Copy/paste thelines below into a Notepad session. Then do a File, Save as..., and enter the filename fix_lan.cmd
net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

Last step: A registry change for both Home and Pro:

Start, Run, regedit
Navigate to this Value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA
RestrictAnonymous

If this key is set to 1, change it to 0 (that is a zero)

By default XP Pro is set to use the "Simple File Sharing" in non-Domain settings. This is identical to the networking model used in XP Home. Under Simple File sharing all access authentication is done through the Guest account. If you on the Pro machine have changed the model, checkmark 'Use simple file sharing - recommended' in Control Panel, Folder Options, View (down near the bottom of the list).

Hi,
I tried everything you listed above and still have the same problem. I'm sure that was something that had to be done to get it working, but my problem now is that the server service will not start.

I'm getting the same error messages when I ping or do net view on either computer. I went to services.msc from the start menu and tried to start the server service manually and I'm getting the following message: Could not start the server service on local computer. Error 2001 the specified driver is invalid. The path to executable is: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. I don't know if that helps. I've seen others on other forums having similar problems and they were posting their Hijack this log. I've been told before not to post that log here because it was too big, so here's the link to it.

I also run registry mechanic on both PC's last night and this morning when I restarted my l/t I got a message saying that new hardware was found on my network "WRT54G" (I think that's right). It's my linksys router, but I've never seen it before until today, and when I clicked on it it said that it was invalid and went away.

I can't share anything from either PC. The only thing I see is when I view workgroup computers from my laptop, I can see my laptop. That's as far I've been able to get.

If you need anything else I'll gladly provide it.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions,
Chris

Your log looks OK, just make sure you know what these entries refer to.

O16 - DPF: WebConnect Pro 6.2.10 -
O16 - DPF: {A8683C98-5341-421B-B23C-8514C05354F1} (FujifilmUploader Class) -
Check the Properties of your Local Area Connection and make sure you have both "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File & Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed and they are both ticked?

Have you tried your luck from "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Is there anything showing up in the Event Viewer?

Simple File Sharing- enabled

Simple File Sharing - disabled

If you have UPnP enabled on the WRT54G router (the default setting) it can show in Network Places as a new device.

You have a choice there (on the left panel) to Hide UPnP devices from showing.

If you cannot start the Server service, that is a fairly serious bar to file and printer sharing. Look in the Event Logs for more information as to the source and error number, as detailed error message text as to why the service cannot start.

Hi,
I got the server service started on my desktop by running sfc /scannow.

I'm exhausted as to what to do now.

I run ping "ip", net view and ipconfig/all from both pc's, my desktop and wireless laptop and posted the links below so that maybe someone can see something I don't.

Here's the scenario. When I turn my d/t on I can see it in Network Places under workgroup computers. When I power on the l/t it shows up on the d/t under workgroup computers. However, I can't access the laptop from the d/t. It says laptop not accessible. Network path not found. May not have permission to access the network.

When I go to view workgroup computers from the l/t, I can't see anything. It says that my network is not accessible.

I've run the permissions command that bcastner posted above to a tee and even downloaded the NT permissions from Microsoft and put it in the system32 folder which was suggested from one of the links posted above.

I have all firewalls off on both pc's until I get it working. When I startup the l/t the only error messages I'm getting in event viewer are 8032 and 8021.

Here's the information from both computers.

Pinged from the Laptop:

Do you think that the problem could be within my router's settings?

Thanks all for the advice,
Chris

On each workstation:

Start, Run, CMD

net config redirector.

Mine reads, for example:

When you try to check another network connection you receive the "Ping: transmit failed, error code 65" error message

"Error Message - PING: transmit failed, error code 65

Description: This error message occurs when you try to ping any IP address.

Solution: A firewall program has been incompletely removed. Re-install it, then remove it as described in our article on removing firewalls."

Some Anti Virus software comes with hidden firewall components too?

Have you tried your luck via "Safe Mode with Networking", you can be pretty sure that will stop all third party interference?

He is getting a 53 error, which I suspect means that Netbios over TCP/IP is not enabled. The "Net config redirector" command above will show if Netbios over TCP/IP has been successfully bound to the network adapter. In my case used as an example above:

[tt]

Workstation active on <<-- Workstation service is OK
NetbiosSmb (000000000000) <<--- Port 445 open for SMB
NetBT_Tcpip_{C3F7E6D7-98C0-47CC-8319-B6509451E662} (0040F484F8DC) <<--- Netbios over TCP/IP active

[/tt]

What does it mean when you have both a 53 and 65 error?

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>ping 192.168.1.100

Pinging 192.168.1.100 with 32 bytes of data:

PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.

Error 53, Network Path Not found Checklist:

. Netbios over TCP/IP not enabled (Middle radio button of three possible choices under Internet Protocol TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS tab}.

. Netbios Helper Service not started.

. Port 445 blocked by firewall, including possible "hidden" firewalls in Antivirus software (PC-Illan, for example); and in VPN client software (CISCO VPN Client notable in this regard).

. Node type Peer-to-Peer, a non-Broadcast Node Type.

. If using WINS, WINS server not available or bad entry

. If using LMHOSTS file is not accessible, or bad entry

Error 65, Ping Transmit Failed Checklist:

Usually because the XP Network Wizard was run, and ICS was enabled by user error.

• The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature is enabled.
• Firewall software from Zone Labs, is installed on the computer. ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarmPro are examples of Zone Labs firewall software.
• The ZoneLabs firewall software is not correctly configured for ICS.

Workaround:

. Disable Internet Connection Sharing on any machine where enabled;

. Uninstall Zone Alarm. Disabling not enough. Restart and test machine.

When the issue is resolved, update Zone Alarm and reinstall.
Configre exceptions for Windows Networking.

Lord, I must be retarded. I thought when I disabled ZoneAlarm that that was no longer a problem. I didn't realize that I had it installed because I uninstalled it on the d/t and didn't see it running on my l/t.

I went to add/remove and uninstalled it on my l/t and restarted and now everything is perfect.

I appreciate everyone's help from getting my server service started(which using sfc/scannow could be very useful to someone else because I would have never found it hadn't it been for the link provided) to realizing the firewall was still a factor.

Thanks everyone,
Chris
