Can't send mail over 10MB (exch server 2003) 3

I get a non-deliverable report (with error codes 5.5.0 and 5.3.4 when I try and send a mail over about 10MB.

I've set limits at 100,000KB in each of 'Global settings', 'SMTP Connector settings', 'SMTP virtual server settings', and 'User mailbox settings'.

Exchange server message tracking shows the message being transferred outbound (and I can see the network connection is busy for several minutes as data is being transferred across to the internet connection), but then a non-delivered report (NDR) is generated.

I can't work out what is creating the NDR! Can anyone help?

If the NDR is from the remote (destinee) server, then that is quite normal. Most servers still limit to 5 MB, so 10 is already alot.
You can look at the header to see who is generating the NDR.

marcs41 is right, but let me add some more info, for your future analisys.
The error code in your NDR is very important. With the error number you can have a clue about what happened. I'll show you how.

Error code 5.5.0:
Permanent Failure/Other or undefined protocol status
Error code 5.3.4:
Permanent Failure/X.3.4 Message too big for system

You just have to check wich server returned the NDR in the message header and you got the answer.

I have a similar problem, also related to the message size, however all messages larger than 50K, are not sent. No message limits have been set. The messages are internal, between 5 Exchange 2003 servers. The messages remain in the queue, and are retried until the expiry timout period has been reached, with the NDR reporting that the message wasnt able to be sent and a timeout has occurred. Message tracking shows the message being resubmitted for outbound transission but never comepletes. The servers are all Exchange 2003 with SP1. Messages less than 50K are sent, after a short delay, but with success.
Any ideas?

There is an easy fix here. open up the exchange systems manger and open up the global settings. right click message delivery and go to the defaults tab. verify that all are set to no limit. This worked for me.

That was the first parameter checked.
The message size limit was the Exchange default - 10240KB - therefore wasnt the problem!
Any other ideas?

Sounds like network problems.

The problem of not being able to send messages larger than 50K was reported by a client. I believe he re-installed Exchange but I cannot say for sure - all requests for feedback where not forthcoming - sorry
