I have a 3640 that I'm trying to reset the password on and I can't send a break sequence from my HP laptop. I have a USB to serial converter that works fine for configuring Cisco devices, but I just can't send a break. I've tried Hyperterminal, Putty, and HotVT. I've done key remapping and just can't get this to work so I'm guessing the trouble is with the adaptor. Anyone else run into this?

I use Tera Term because of this---I have Prolific USB-to_serial comm cables, and alt-B in Tera Term works just fine. Try Tera Term, and alt-b (or "send break" under the control tab) is the break sequence. If no go, then try it with a Prolific...this is the one I have...

I installed TeraTerm and gave it a shot. It only allows serial ports 1-4 and my Belkin adapter is using port 5. I'll pick up one of the Prolifics tonight. I was leaning toward that anyway as it appears that the HotVT is sending the break command (light flashes on the adapter when key programmed for break command is pressed) but it isn't being sent through the adapter.

You can change the serial port your adapter uses. Additionally there is a newer Tera Term that supports up to com32 or something like that.

Burtsbees, I picked up a Tripp Lite adapter and using HotVT, it works great. Thanks.

Great choice, I have been using the Tripp Lite 209 adapter for a few years and its buy far the best one I have used.
