I have recently installed one or 2 new printers on our network being run by our server.

The problem is none of the client machines can see them. They appear to see the network fine and have access to all the files on the server etc, but the view of the server (from a client machine) seems out of date. I hope this makes sense.

If you type in "\\<nameofpdc>" from a command prompt on a client machine, it brings up the view of the server fine, the printers that are shared etc... only some of the printers that it see's dont exist anymore or have changed names. Its like the client machines are seeing an old version. I know this might not make sense but its right.

They only thing i can see id that the client machine's have no wins record, so i tested this by placing a record in the wins server from one of the machines, but this hasnt worked either. The only thing i can think of is resynching the domain. If i do this will i have to get all the users to log off?

Any help much appreciated.

Can the clients actually connect to the printers. Use the net use command to see this.

Ie type
net view \\server
from a client to see the shares incl printer available

type
net use lpt2: \\server\printershaename
from a client. This will connect your lpt2: to the network printer. then type
dir > lpt1:
and the printer should spit out a directory listing ( you may have to do a formfeed to eject the paper)

This will test to see if the printer share actually works. If this does not work then your printer share is not created properly, if it does work it is a browsing issue (Probabally!!!!)

Double check that the you are not mixing up sharenames with descriptions

Remember that
o) older clients cannot see share names if they are too long, so try sharing the printer as TEST & see if that works.
o) The server & client have to have a common protocol

resyncing the domain should be harmless & users can stay logged on.

If this does not help then give more info, OS versions, is it on the same network etc etc.

Hope this helps a bit.

From the server itself, run \\<servername> to see if you see the proper shares on the server locally. Did you?

Some operating systems can't see printer if there are spaces in the share name or if the printer name has too many charaters. Try to rename a printer share to something shorter \\<servername>\print1

9x machines have this type of problem...
