I recently installed a new motherboard and processor in my computer. Every thing runs fine, but I can't se the slave drive in windows XP.

my specs are:
K7VTA3 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2500
Windows XP

The BIOS shows the drive on startup, but it can not be found in XP. I tried running PartitionMagic 8.0, but it could not see it also. Jumpers are set and I ran the install disk from the MFG, but I still can't see it in XP.

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional Disk 2" /fastdetect

Have you checked your boot loader. Running
two hard drives, it should look something like this.
I assume you are, as you mentioned "slave drive."

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional Disk 2" /fastdetect

Have you looked in disk management in XP? If it has not been partitioned, you'll need to do this in disk management before it will appear in explorer (run diskmgmt.msc).

wolluf is half right...it needs to be 'initialized' first. Right click where it says 'Disk 1', then click on 'Initialize Disk'...after it's been initialized, you can partition and/or format the disk

I had used this hard drive in a different system. It contains data that I would like to keep. I can not see it in Disk management at all.

1. try to check both IDE HDD jumpers. Primary HDD must set to MASTER(some hdd has different setting for Single drive and Master drive), and secondary HDD must set to SLAVE, but not CS(Cable Select).

2. try to unplug ur CDROM from IDE2 and plug ur Slave HDD to IDE2. if it appear in XP, then one of ur IDE1 cable connector got problem.

3. try to change power cable. there are 3-5 power cables from PSU.

With kind regards.
