We have a large wan seperated from the internet by a cisco pix firewall. I recently put up a email box. Use Mail.wayneschools.com from outside the network and all is fine, from inside the network, behind firewall, we have to use the internal ip address. Using mail.wayneschools.com sends it to our outside DNS but it stops at the fire wall.

Any ideas. Tried host files on clients and server, NT 40 nothing has helped.

Thanks.

Nick

See my reply to "PIX and Outlook Web Access" regarding problems like this. Hosts files should be enough, and make sure they are pointing to and resolving to the internal addresss. My preferred method (as mentioned in the above post) is to have an internal dns server which points the public dns records at private ip addresses for my internal users. Test with pings to make sure that your name resolution is pointing you properly to the internal address (if using hosts, dns, or whatever).

Here's my hosts file just so you can double-check you have the syntax correct (c:\windows\hosts on Win9x, c:\winnt\drivers\system32\etc\hosts on NT):
10.1.1.1 MATFS01.ourdomain.com MATFS01
#207.1.1.1 MATFS01.ourdomain.com MATFS01

(I use # to comment out the external address when I'm inside, and vica-versa).
