Can't see all tables...

New to Pervasive. Added database in PCC and the only tables that appear are the X$File, X$Field and X$Index. Existing database files don't have any extensions. DDFs and data files copied en masse from network to local machine. Don't even know what questions to ask. Using PSQL 2000i sp4. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

If you're not seeing any tables, your DDFs probably don't have any defined. With Btrieve, field information is not stored in the data file and you need DDFs to describe the record structure to third party applications like PCC or Access. If this is a third party application that's generating the Btrieve files, you should contact them for DDFs. If you don't have DDFs, you might be able to recreate them if you know the record structure.

Thanks Mirtheil: I had come to the same conclusion myself. The DDFs were found in the data directory used by the app so I assumed they were defined. Looking at the File.DDF showed no tables other than the DDF. Three questions if I can ask you... 1) Can applications accessing PSQL 2000i dbs do so without correct DDFs? 2) If so, how might they do it? 3) What does is mean if the files that I think are the data files don't have any extension? Thanks in advance.

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, applications can use the Btrieve API to access the data files. No DDFs are required when using the Btrieve API. This is also the fastest way to access data.
2. See above.
3. Pervasive data files don't have a specific extension. I've seen MKD, DAT, BTR, DB, DRT, BRT, and others including no extension.

If you have blank DDF files you can use BtSearch at

http://www.nssdd.com

to help you analyze the file structure and build the definitions for the DDF files. Once built then you can use ODBC if you choose or any other 3-rd party product.
