I cannot save .gif files from the net by right-click on the picture anymore ( My system : Win98 SE, Celeron 900 , Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2) ! Nothing happened when I right-click on a picture . I checked IExplorer and System files and found them O.K. Please advise how to fix this problem.

Thanks,

If you can't think of anything else to fix it then try reload Win98 SE ! I solved many problems by this "fix-all" method !! Or you can wait for Smitee or reghakr to show up..

Best wishes,

caclo...

ALL websites or just some...?
JUST gifs or other images as well...?

Can you provide a link/url for example...?
At this site what happens when you right click on top image...? Does your context menu appear...ie...Save picture as...,Set as wallpaper, etc...?

smitee

Thanks , Jobodine and Smitee , for coming to my rescue ! This is the point : the context menu did not show up at all when I right-clicked on any pictures ( .jpg, .bmp or .gif ).
In addition, I could not cut and paste texts in input box by right-click any more ! I guess a regfix might be in order here. Please advise...

When you said you "checked IExplorer and System files and found them O.K" what exactly did you mean? If you haven't tried it yet, try using the repair utility included with IE 5.5. It's in Control Panel | Add/Remove Progs, click on IE 5.5 and hit the Add/Remove button, and select "repair". I've had good results with it in the past.

Thanks Tesh and Crisc for your tips.
Tesh:
I unloaded IExplorer 6.0 a month ago ( using IEradicator 2001 ) and reloaded IExplorer 5.5 due to some system conflicts. I did not notice if the problen started right after this event? It could be a possibility ,though.
Crisc :
I did use the IExplorer 5.5 repair utility to ckeck it. I did the same with system files usimg Windows system tools.

I bet you have front page 2000 installed? when you did you disabled right clicking in internet explorer

How to Disable Right-Click Functionality
The following examples illustrate two methods for turning off (disabling) right-click functionality in a browser.

NOTE : You may receive an error message if you copy and paste the examples directly from this article into FrontPage. The angle brackets (&quot;<&quot; and &quot;>&quot;) may appear as escaped HTML code (&quot;&lt;&quot; and &quot;&gt;&quot;). To work around this behavior, paste the script in a blank Notepad document, and then copy it from Notepad before you paste it into FrontPage.

Example #1: Turn Off the Shortcut Menu
Open a new page in FrontPage.

Switch to HTML view.

Locate the opening <BODY> tag.

Modify the <BODY> tag to resemble the following:

<body onContextMenu=&quot;return false&quot;>Preview the page in Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. When you attempt to right-click anywhere on the page, the shortcut menu is not displayed.

Example #2: Use JavaScript to Display a Warning Message
Open a new page in FrontPage.

On the Insert menu, click Advanced .

Select HTML .

Type the following JavaScript code into the HTML Markup box:

<script language=&quot;JavaScript&quot;>

var message = &quot;Sorry, that function is disabled.\n\n&quot;;
message += &quot;This page is copyrighted, and &quot;;
message += &quot;all content is protected.&quot;;

function click(e) {
if (document.all) {
if (event.button == 2) {
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
if (document.layers) {
if (e.which == 3) {
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
}

if (document.layers) {
document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
}
document.onmousedown=click;
</script>Click OK .

Preview the page in Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. When you attempt to right-click anywhere on the page, a message box appears, stating that the contents of the page are copyrighted, and therefore the right-click function is turned off (disabled).

Do you have context menu functionality in Explorer.....?

With the info I have I'm sorry I don't have any single answer for you.

Personally, though as Tesh mentioned...
Have you considered reinstalling IE6.0 and if no joy then following MKB article

Thanks Grygst76 and Smitee.

Grygst76:
_ On my system, I have Office XP which includes FrontPage 2002 . But on my old system ( Win98 SE, Celeron 466 ), I have Office 2000 and Frontpage 2000 . I just checked it, the context menu works fine in IExplorer . So I am afraid your diagnosis might not be applicable in this case .
__ I am confused by your examples : I want to reactivate the context menu in IEplorer and you suggest the opposite. Please clarify. Thanks...

Smitee:
The problem occured only in IExplorer .
I am digesting all the infos you threw at me !

I apologize for not clarifying.. What I meant was check to see if that in case could be preventing you from seeing sites from the frontpage2002

Disable Content Advisor by following these steps in Internet Explorer:
In Internet Explorer 4, on the View menu, click Internet Options .

In Internet Explorer 5, Interntet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Explorer 6, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options .

Click the Content tab.

Under Content Advisor , click Disable .

In the Password box, type the supervisor password, and then click OK .

When you receive the following prompt, click OK :

Content Advisor has been turned off. Make sure you turn it on again before you allow someone else to use your computer.
Method 2
Click the HTML link to load the Web page, and then on the File menu, click Save As or Print . This method assumes that the Web page successfully passes through Content Advisor.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION
When Content Advisor is enabled, you can save or print a Web page only after it passes through Content Advisor. You cannot save or print a Web page by right-clicking an HTML link and then clicking Save Target As or Print Target , because this method bypasses Content Advisor. NOTE : Content Advisor settings apply to all users on the local computer and cannot be changed by users who are not administrators on the local computer (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 only). You cannot create different Content Advisor settings for different users on the same computer. If you did not enable Content Advisor and share a computer with multiple users, contact the other users to see if they enabled Content Advisor.

now you have me in microsofts site read and you will find the info you need!!

WD2000: Unable to Save Picture from Internet Explorer (Q252783)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Word 2000
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 , for Windows 95
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 , for Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 , for Windows 98

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, when you right-click a graphic on a Web page created in Word 2000, you see different commands than you expected and you are unable to save a graphic.

For example, the Save Picture As command does not appear on the shortcut menu. The commands that may be available on the shortcut menu include:

Back
Select All
Create Shortcut
Add to Favorites
View Source
Encoding
Print
Refresh
Properties

CAUSE
There are two reasons for this behavior:

When you create a Web page in Word 2000 and add graphics to the page, Word adds markup tags that provide support for Vector Markup Language (VML) graphics. Word adds the additional markup regardless of whether you have selected the Rely on VML to display graphics in browsers check box (on the Tools menu, click Options , and then click Web Options on the General tab).

This is a limitation of the way Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 handles the HTML generated by Word. Internet Explorer 5.0 does not render the same shortcut menus for VML graphics as it does for standard HTML (IMG) graphics.

WORKAROUND
Microsoft has released an Office HTML Filter that you can use to remove Office-specific markup tags embedded in Office 2000 documents saved as a Web page (HTML). This filter is available at the following Microsoft Web address:

To use the HTML Filter to remove the VML information from your file, follow these steps:

Download and install the HTML Filter 2.0.

Start the HTML Filter by clicking Programs on the Start menu, pointing to Microsoft Office Tools , and then clicking Microsoft Office HTML Filter 2.0 .

In the Microsoft Office HTML Filter 2.0 dialog box, click Add . Locate your Web page and click Open .

Click Options and click to clear all option check boxes. Click OK and then click Apply .

The HTML Filter automatically edits the HTML code to remove the VML information. It also creates a backup of the original file, assigns it a .bak extension, and stores it in the same location as the new file.

MORE INFORMATION
When you right-click a standard HTML graphic in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, the following menu items are available:

Save Picture As
Set As Wallpaper
Set As Desktop Item
Copy
Add to Favorites
Properties
When you save a file as a Web page in Microsoft Word, Word adds Office-specific markup tags to the standard Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and cascading style sheet markup. This additional markup preserves rich text formatting and page layout, and allows Microsoft Word to &quot;round-trip&quot; documents between binary and HTML format. The HTML Filter is designed to reduce file size by removing this additional markup language.

NOTE : When you use the HTML Filter, it removes some round-tripping capabilities.

Thank you very much, Grygst76, for the extended infos . I tried them out but I am afraid that the problem may be more systemic.Your tips may be applicable when the context menu shows up . Now the context menu does not appear at all when I right-click anywhere in an IExplorer window ! It seems like some entries related to &quot;shellex&quot; in the registry may be corrupted or accidentally removed ??
I would welcome further suggestions.

I guess you can look at this as well

SYMPTOMS
When you right-click the desktop and then click Properties , the pointer may change to an hourglass for 2 to 3 seconds, and then nothing else may happen. The same behavior may occur when you attempt to start the Display tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE
An entry that is placed in the registry by the software for your video adapter may prevent Display properties from being displayed.

RESOLUTION
WARNING : Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the &quot;Changing Keys and Values&quot; Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the &quot;Add and Delete Information in the Registry&quot; and &quot;Edit Registry Data&quot; Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Locate and click the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls Folder\Display\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers
There may be several keys under the PropertySheetHandlers key. The two standard keys are DeskHtmlExt and PlusPack CPL Extension. There may be a third or fourth entry with the name of the video adapter.

For each key other than the two standard keys, follow these steps:

Click the registry key, and then click Export Registry File on the Registry menu.

Type a name that will help you remember the name of the key, and then click Save .

Delete the key by pressing DELETE.

Repeat steps A through C for each key other than the two standard keys.

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot your computer.

Thanks, Grygst76, for the detailed but way-off-the mark infos! I need a fix to re-enable the context menu in IExplorer 5.5 SP2 , not a list of system hot keys! Your good intention is well appreciated .

I listed these to help you try a different way to open a context menu for you to try thru key commands

Finally , I solved this problem by reinstallation of Win98 SE ! I still did not understand why it worked! The moral sounds ridiculous : &quot;When you don't understand , just reinstall Windows ??? &quot; . Thank you everyone for trying to help me out. Again , Smitee, thanks for the infos. I also tip my hat to Grygst76 for his tremendous goodwill and kindness.
