cant run programs

i have a p75 laptop with a backpack cd drive.
it was given to me and worked good i installed the backpack cd and it worked. however it needed a good cleaning to get rid of programs i didnt need ect. so i reformatted the hard drive. i re installed win 98 and win 98 plus. that works fine. however if i copy data from my desktop to 3.5 disk ot burn a cd of data. the laptop will read the directoer on the disk but when i try to copy to the laptop it says there is nothing there.
my desktop is running winme and the laptop is running win98. both are fat32 hard drive.
these disks worked before on the laptop.
i cant put winme on the laptop due to it only being a p75 and 24 meg ram.
whats wrong. i cant install my zip drive or my pcmcia card to get on the net since the laptop dosent reconize the programs on the disks

well i went and bought a 16 bit pcmcia ehternet card, and was able to install the driver from the diskette. went to windows update and got a message my browser was to old to connect to microsoft update. so i went to internet explorer and updated my browser to the newest.
and now my hard drive and disk drive reads any disks again.
very strange problem and stranger solition. but it is working fine now.

im not a beginner myself. and i tryed every trick i could think of and called in a few big favors from a few higer ups and we all were scratching our heads over this problem. but thats how we all learn.
and for sure ill never forget this one.
all most one for belive it or not
