Can't resolve name from outlook address list

I have recently added a win 2k server with exchange 2k to my win 2k mixed mode domain. The exchange server has not had dcpromo run on it.

Does the machine have to be a domain controller or can it just stay as a server?

When i try to log into this server at the moment through outlook after setting up the outlook client by typing the server name and a valid alias name it comes back and tells me that the name can't be reolved from the outlook address list!

This server does not have to be a dc.

Someone with more experience than I on E2K will have to help with the client connection woe. Exchange services start OK?

I have just stopped and restarted all exchange services and had no errors!
