A user is having problems renaming folders in his My Documents folder. Normally when you right-click on a folder, you get a list of options to choose from. For whatever reason, "Rename" is gone. So instead I tried to go to the folder properties and rename the folder in the General tab. The only problem was the folder name was grayed out, so I could not make any changes. Then I tried moving the folder to the desktop, and it allowed me to rename, but if I move it back, it won't allow me to rename the folder. So then I checked to see if his My Documents folder was on read-only, and it wasn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't state what edition he's running. If it's XP Home, you have to boot into Safe Mode to see the Security tab in order to take Ownership of files or folders. In order to see the Security tab your hard drive needs to be formatted NTFS. If it's XP Pro, make sure he didn't turn off simple file sharing. While in safe mode, you may want to run an updated AV & AS to make sure some little pest is not the source.

See if anything here is a help:

Once you correct the problem, you may want to set a restore point.

Have you tried from Safe Mode to Rename it?

Can System Restore be used to step back in time, check if the problem was occurring a few weeks ago, then "undo" the Restore and return to the present if it is too painful in the past?

What is the location of this My Documents folder, is it on the local machine or in some other location?

Can this user Rename other folders in their profile?

Any errors in the Event Viewer?

See if registering this .dll does anything.

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll + do a reboot.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
